Bengaluru: Corporator's daughter commits suicide over dowry harassment

Bengaluru, Nov 2 (Agencies): A newly married woman allegedly committed suicide over dowry harassment by her mother-in-law, at HSR layout in the city.

Police said she left behind a four-page suicide note, in which she said her mother-in-law had been harassing her daily over dowry. The death note also alleged that her mother-in-law did not give her proper food.

Vanitha (28), daughter of Mysuru corporator Nagabhushan, was found hanging from the ceiling of her room last night.

She had got married to Vasanth, a techie from Chennai five months back.

The incident came to light when Vasanth came home from work and found his wife dead. He immediately informed the police.

Police said the woman's mother-in-law and husband were detained and were being questioned.

The best is to implement a TADA type legislation for deterrence. However, the problem is some of the empowered lot want to also misuse this to blackmail the groom and his family. Look at the false rape claims (sometime as revenge, and some other time for marriage coercion), false dowry claims etc., around. The sad part of the whole story is, it is women like these that are at the receiving end. If women act responsibly, considering the emerging gender bias emerging in favor of women, stronger legislations can be considered. Community at large must shun such families and make an example of this case.

Unless our Indian women become self sufficient, independent and able to support themselves the dependency on marriage s/husbands will continue and cases like this will go on and on. Can you even dream of such cases happening in US, UK, Germany or any other developed countries?

The most culpable is the mother in law for dowry harassment. Dowry itself is illegal in India. Next the son for not protecting his wife. He behaved like a coward. He should have moved out with his wife or moved his mother out to live elsewhere. Finally if the woman's parents were aware of the harassment, they should have brought their daughter home and annulled the marriage. Family honor is not worth the life of your child.

It is difficult to judge. However the Police have taken the case for investigation and the truth will reveal itself.

It must however be noted that dowry harassments and dowry deaths are being heard of regularly. It is expedient that that this menace about dowry harassments are resolved once for all. Hope the Government will take p these cases and that the guilty are severely punished.

There should be a specific law passed re. dowry and the like

Sosad .Hardly she is married ,came the suecide news thereafter.why all these in laws want dowry? Are they buying the bride ?The more one sutdied, desto higher the dowry ?girl too studied and spent a lot of money ,later marraige too is not a discounter rated one.Prents hope that their child will be atleast.Sad now they have to hear about her suecide. Why this well educated girl suecided because of mother inlaws dowry thurst?she could have told her husband about it and or parents for a good tip.or she didnt want her parents to worry ?Atleast in future brides ,please make sure before your marraige, that mother in law or groom doesnt disturb you or harass you witha dowry drama.when they are so greedy about dowry, please dont marry him but a man who accepts you as his partner loves you as you are.when dowry one is buying you.Better ask someone for a good counsel.when doesnt help try to live without in law or a man who doesnt listen to you but his mother ,just lead a life seperate, but dont heavens sake suecide.your life is too precious .May her soul rest in peace.heartfelt sympathy to all who loved her.

    moshu,

You are soo naive that it's laughable at best.

Alchohol cannot be banned. If banned there is bound to be political dissent, which will lead to instability in a country. Don't agree with me..... take a world map and check where there is a complete prohibition of alcohol. I bet you none of those countries will be democratic. All the countries that ban alcohol will be dictatorships or theocratic in nature.

Mother always brings up her children in a loving a way but Mother in Law can make or ruin her children's wedding.
Though they share ''mother'' in the title but there is a lot of difference between mother and mother in law.

in such cases it's very difficult to judge who is guilty.
in arranged marriages it takes little time to understand each other. so couples need to understand each other and appreciate each other's differences.
by taking such step then blaming other might not be right. before taking such extreme step do counselling with parents, still do counselling, as we studied from our childhood there is always solution for each problem, but most of us don't adopt it.
even court grant time limit of 6 months to 1 year to break any such relations, but we don't have patience to wait.
at last, last and last, if you are not happy with your life partner, do separate and live your life.
But never ever Suicide is solution for anything, it might be.

suicide is not solution for anything.
proper counselling required now a days. if a person not happy with his/her marriage, do counselling with parents, but taking such step will not be acceptable from both end.

In IAS exam, a person writes a brilliant 1500 words essay about how dowry is a social evil. Impresses everyone and cracks exam. A year later, same person demands a dowry of 1 crore, because he is an IAS officer.

Beautiful life lost due to greed of mother in law.
Dowry harassment also should be dealt with seriously like triple talaq , with non bailable imprisonment for at least 5 years.
    RIP
