Bangalore: Desperate Congress Demands CBI Investigation into Defections

Bangalore, Jul 11: The Congress party, through a memorandum submitted to the state Governor Rameshwar Thakur, has demanded for the dismissal of the state government headed by Yeddyurappa for acting against the people's verdict by encouraging defections and also to order Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) inquiry into the modus oparandi followed by the ruling party to engineer these defections.

Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge had earlier in the day, chaired an emergency meeting of the Congress legislature party, where a decision was taken to depute a delegation of Congressmen to the Governor with a demand for the dismissal of the state government. The Congress in its memorandum has said that Yeddyurappa and his ministerial colleagues lured Karwar MLA Anand Asnotikar, Doddaballapur MLA Narasimharaju and Turuvekere MLA Jaggesh, who had become legislators after contesting on Congress tickets. Yeddyurappa and his cabinet colleagues have lured them into the BJP by offering money and power in return for their betrayal of the Congress party, making mockery of the Anti-Defection laws and throwing to winds the norms of democracy. The government should be immediately dismissed and the president's rule should be imposed in the state, the party has urged.

For saving his government from getting toppled, Yeddyurappa is engaging in horse trading. He has been offering ministerial berths and chairmanships of corporations to get legislators from other parties to defect to the BJP. Crores of rupees have changed hands in this murky deal. Hence, CBI investigation should be ordered without delay, they demanded.

Yeddyurappa and his cabinet colleagues are working against the popular vote and the role of money and power in the said conspiracy is evident. The government is engaging in unconstitutional activities, deserving its dismissal, the party has asserted.

The delegation led by Mallikarjun Kharge comprised of ex-ministers D K Shivakumar, T B Jaychandra, J Alexander, MLAs Dinesh Gundu Rao, Narendrababu, Ramaswami Gowda, N A Harris, Sayyed Yasin, MP Tejaswini Gowda, MLCs M V Rajashekharan, Veeranna Mattikatti, V R Sudarshan, G S Patil, S R Patil, N Manjunath, Mallajamma, M Ramalingappa and KPCC general secretary M Ramachandrappa.
