Hubballi: Northern Karnataka heats up over Mahadayi issue, protests peaceful so far

Hubballi, Dec 27 (DHNS): Normal life was disrupted at many places in the city as the Mahadayi, Kalasa-Banduri Horata Samiti, farmers' organisations and pro-Kannada organisations blocked roads, burnt tires and shouted slogans, on Wednesday.

Since there was violence the last time such protests were held, police presence was higher this time.

Over 2000 police personnel are on duty across Dharwad district this time for the maintenance of law and order.

The heat of the agitations was felt in Hubballi city to a greater extent. Protests were staged at Chennamma circle and Hosur circle.

Bus services were totally suspended and shops remained closed in response to the bundh call.

Besides Hubbali, Belagavi, Bagalkote, Gadag and other districts of northern Karnataka, remained tense due to isolated protests over the Mahadayi dispute.

So far the protests have remained largely non-violent, police said.
