Hassan, Dec 30: A youth who obtained a house site from his mother through gift deed, and later shunted them out of the house after building a house, has been driven out of his home by government officials. The court of the sub-divisional officer here passed a remarkable order on Thursday December 28, restoring the site and land thereon to the parents.

Jayamma and Kenge Gowda couple living in Hemavathi Nagara extension here have two daughters and two sons. One of the sons has distanced himself from parents and living separately. One of the daughters has been married, and she lives in the same locality.

Jayamma had given a site standing in her name to her son, Keshavamurthy, by way of gift deed. Keshavamurthy built a house there, looked after parents for some time, and then unceremoniously showed them the door. The mother, frustrated at this behaviour, prepared another gift deed through which they gave away the site to daughter, Latha.

The parents also had filed complaint in the court of sub-divisional officer here under Maintenance and Welfare of Senior Citizens Act, 2007 during May this year. The court of the sub-divisional officer, which took up the case in different phases between May 29 and November 27, had served notices repeatedly to Keshavamurthy for his personal appearance. But Keshavamurthy did not pay heed.

Sub-divisional officer, Dr H L Nagaraj, upholding the plea of the parents, asked daughter, Latha, to return the gift deed in her name to her parents. After Latha agreed to do so, he ordered that the site and house concerned should be given to the possession of the parents to enable them to lead an independent life. He also ordered the municipal commissioner to cancel the Khata change affected in municipal records in favour of Keshavamurthy on the basis of the gift deed.

When the government officials, in tune with the orders, began to shift things inside the house, Keshavamurthy objected. He and his wife quarrelled with his parents. They sought time to vacate the house. As the advocate for the petitioners did not agree, the officials evicted him.

Keshavamurthy threatened to commit suicide, got a death note written by his wife, held a bottle of poison in his hand and said that he would consume it. The police personnel snatched away the bottle and foiled his suicide attempt.
