Mangaluru: Yakshagana performance by journos, honours mark Press Club Day

Mangaluru, Jan 7: Press Club Day, jointly organized by Mangaluru Press Club, Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Union (DKWJU) and Patrika Bhavana Trust was celebrated at Urwa Church Hall, Lady Hill here on Saturday, January 6.

District commissioner Sasikanth Senthil was the chief guest on the occasion. K Anand Shetty, president, Patrika Bhavana Trust and Jagannath Shetty Bala, president of DKWJU were the guests of honour. M N Rajendra Kumar, president, SCDCC Bank, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura of Kalkura Foundation, chief of news bureau Udayavani Kannada daily Manohar Prasad were present on the dais.

Ganesh Kamath, proprietor of G K Decorators, Moodbidri was felicitated and presented ‘Press Club Award 2017’. An elated Ganesh said, "I feel really proud. I never even thought in my dreams that I would be given such an honour. When I lost my hands in an accident, I was down and out. I am thankful to people who encouraged me to work hard and be what I am today despite my physical disabilities. I am grateful to M N Rajendra Kumar who gave me my first contract of decorating a function in 2007. He has been a constant support for me. I am also thankful to all my workers.”

Addressing the gathering DC Sasikanth Senthil said, “This is a wonderful occasion for the press fraternity. Ganesh Kamath is an example on how one can be successful in life. SP Sudheer Kumar Reddy had told me that Dakshina Kannada press is the best, and I too have felt the same in my two month tenure so far. They have been working in a traditional way which is very appreciable. Media along with the administration have to work in a positive way for the society. I wish all the members of press to have a wonderful and fruitful year ahead.”

Dr Ronald Anil Fernandes, president, Mangaluru press club, welcomed the gathering.

Top journalists and media persons Manohar Prasad, U B Shivanand, U K Kumarnath, Jagannath Shetty Bala, Keshav Kundar, P V Hariprasad Rai, Mohammad Arif, Taranath Kapikad, Dr Srilakshmi, Apul Ira, Deviprasad Jain, Naresh Kumar Sasihithlu, K T Manjunath, Gopal Anchan, Mounesh Vishwakarma, Kishore Peraje and Dr Ronald Anil Fernandes were honoured by the guests.

Kadri Ramachandra Rai, Yakshagana trainer and children of mediapersons with outstanding achievements were honoured.

Prizes were also distributed to winners of sports events that were held recently.

Prior to the formal function mediapersons of Mangaluru performed a stunning Yakshagana on the theme 'Shakrari Kalaga (Indrajithu Kalaga)' under the direction of Elluru Ramachandra.

Kishore from Vishwavaani played a character of Komme Indrajithu, Ganesh Mavanji from Indian Express as Laxmana, Diwakar from Digvijaya TV as Rama, Harish Motukaana from Vijayavaani as Ravana, Jeethendra Kundeshwar from Vishwavaani as Hanumantha, Suresh D Palli from Hosa Digantha as Vibhishana, Harsha from Indian Express as Jambavantha, Raghav from The Hindu as Sugreeva, Indira N K from Karavali Ale as Seethe, Suresh Bhandary from coastal digest as Sukhracharya, Chethan from Daijiworld 24x7 TV as Nala and Bharath from ETV as Neela performed Yakshagaana and enthralled the Yakshagana enthusiasts.
