Udupi: Ayurvedic practitioner dispenses allopathic tablet, girl dies of overdose

Udupi, Jan 10: A teenager who was allegedly prescribed allopathic tablets by an Ayurvedic practioner for skin problems lost her life on Wednesday January 10 due to medical complications arising from drug overdose.

Namratha (17), a first PU student of Vidydaya PU college in the city and resident of Parkala Agrahara near here, was bothered by pimples on her face. It is said that she approached an Ayurveda practitioner at Parkala near her home for treatment last week. The doctor had given her four allopathic tablets. It is not known how the tablets were advised to be consumed.

After the teenager suffered from high fever, she was admitted to KMC hospital, Manipal, on Saturday. The doctors there diagnosed the problem as drug overdose, it is said. They also told the girl's parents that their daughter had suffered multiple organ failure as a result of overdose of medicines, and that chances of her survival were bleak.

Namratha breathed her last on Wednesday January 10 morning in the hospital. So far, no official complaint has been filed by the parents of the girl. The college has declared holiday today as a mark of respect towards the departed student. It is unclear as yet what measures the family will opt to take relating to this issue.

    Why do Ayurveds are so helpless that they won't work without taking help of allopathic medicines ?
    If they are so adamant on practising allopathy why don't they do MBBS ?
    Aren't they betraying ayurvedic knowledge they gained during BAMS ?

    RIPvery sad news,Here Multi organ failure due to drug over dose is not acceptable rather ridiculous or prejudiced May be anaphylaxis which is nobody,s controll or more likely due to some other pathology/comorbidity

    IMHO, this is, in all probability, is not a result of pimple tablets, but some other concurrently running cause like ingestion of some poisonous substance, venomous bite, or even acute attack of dengue fever, etc.!! Simply based on some unsubstantiated statement pouncing on ayurvedic docs gullibility!!

    Today when "quack chemists", running petty shops, can directly dispense medicines to poor n uneducated people just by listening to the symptoms y can't a qualified ayurvedic doc do so??? Go to any TDH chemist, in DK, n tell ur symptoms, n he will not hesitate a single minute to dispense some high margin drug to a gullible patient??

    And whoever said ayurvedic docs r not capable of prescribing basic allopathic meds r too smart or naive!!

    During most of my young days in Mumbai, I n our family have been treated successfully for various ailments, including dental by even RMP (registered medical practioners) w/o any issues as there was acute shortage of MBBS docs then!!

    Even allopathic medicine is not an exact science, but it's practice always sways between science n skill/art because our body is a very complex organism n requires to be treated holistically, not on organ by organ basis!!

    Its unlikley that a drug used for pimples killed the patient here. It might have been some other cause . Before blaming the Ayurvedic doctor let there be a proper investigation into this episode

    it is unikely that an overdose killed the girl. Let there be a proper enquiry before blaming anyone. I feel the drugs used for pimples even if its used in over dose is unlikely to kill. Let the truth come out before blaming anyone

    Some of the Homeopathic and Arurvedic Doctors are good learners and they learn all the side effects ,Effects of Allopathic Medicines and have in fact mastered them well .If such Ayush Doctors prescribe Allopathic Mediciines it may be well and good
    In fact Govt has given some clearance on that .Even though it is illegal it may not be Immoral as they have learnt well
    But the new NMC bill is just giving blanket approval for Ayush Drs with just 6 months Bridge course which is dangerous .All may not be good learners and they will surey do Kitha Pathi like this case
    I have seen both sides of Ayush Drs
    There are some very big Politicians ( May Be both BJP and or Congress )who own these AYUSH medical colleges and they want to promote BAMS Degree with good capitation fees by getting half of Rs 1 Crore ike MBBS who are trying to play with the lives of innocent Patients

    Every synthetic or formulas in allopathy medicine have their own side effects which the doctors are taught & how to take precautions when prescribing them to patients.
    When other form of practitioners try their hand at these without knowing the correct dosage these tragedies do happen.
    Use real or our ancient ayurvedic products in the form & way they are prescribed, but when these herbs or roots are not available then opt for over the counter potions though laced with preservatives they have no or very little side effects. But a word of caution as they interfere with allopathic medicines if taken together & might endanger the life of the taker.

    RIP! Have a totally contraction view!!
    It appears to be an acute allergy to the tablets (anaphylactic shock) or patient should have had some comorbidty!! It is very rare for a healthy young female by ingesting 4 tablets prescribed for pimples!! Qualified ayurvedic doc would not be so dumb to prescribe some dangerous tablets for pimples!!

    @Rudolf R.Mumbai,very sad incident.I dont think she developed anaphylitic shock.If so she would have died on the spot.Most probably she cosumed over dosis of tablets ,God knows whether doctor ordered,or the mother misunderstood the dosage.I experienced once patient developed high fever as he had the taken the tablet all once.Second I lost my sister before my birth as a ayuverda doctor gave tablets to her skin problem.ever since my mother never used to go to a ayurveda medicine.Very very sad.May the soul of deceased girl rest in peace.Heartfelt sympathys to the family.

    In case you are not aware: there are certified Ayurvedhs and Homeopaths who have completed the prescribed 5 year degree course and there are quacks or those who have done some sort of 6 months or 6 day private diploma courses.

    There are certified Ayurvedhs and Homeopaths currently working in Allopathic hospitals alongside allopaths and have vast experience in prescribing fit for allopathic medicines under the name of the allopathic doctors and I am sure these will benefit from the bridge course.

    For the records there are many brilliant Ayurvedhs and Homeopaths who might have graduated as allopaths had it not been for the ego and false pride of those people with pots of money, black or white, who nurtured the fancy of having a doctor in the family and conveniently bought the seats in medical colleges.

    And also some of the doctors graduating through many a medical colleges might have had their admit processed on PUC completed through long distance. Thanks to MCI everything is possible; that's why we have allopaths who certify living babies as dead and pack them in envelopes and those who certify accident victim as dead and freeze him for 6 hours.

    We often come across advertisements in the guise of 'news' as to how some medical miracles are performed in hospitals with ' state of the art' facilities and super efficient docs. But the old saying ' Lawyers' mistakes are hung six feet from above and doctors' are buried six feet down under (well, in Hindu culture they are incinerated)' is very much valid any time.

    My advice, if you go to Ayurvedic Doctor expecting an Ayurvedic treatment for your problem and if the Doctor prescribes Allopathic medicine just keep the medicine aside and consult a Allopathic doctor .

    Rest in peace = Govt says after short/ bridge course all ayush and bds are make doctors and the new bill under prepartion to north inda as scarcity of doctors. To give all butchers and cooks short / bridge training and make doctors for all over india and govt wants to save money what paid to doctors or what not. check struggle going with MCI and new nominated body created short cut for learned doctors and based on last weeeks strike in kerala. any way wish all the good for the society and cizens of india and grow good terms

    1) learn what homeopathy is. It's one of the pseudoscientific health care system. If you don't understand the difference between homeopathy, ayurveda or allopathic, don't comment and showcase your ignorance here. Or do you believe in acupuncture, chiropractic and healing crystals too?

    2) Learn what logical fallacies are. You generalised the entire allopathy field because of two incidents you know. It's called a generalisation fallacy. Same thing can be done with people named Antonio because I know 2 Antonio's that are bad.

    3) Learn how admissions in medical colleges work. It's not possible, to just walk into a college with millions in a suitcase and cancel a seat gotten through entrance exams. There are only a few number of seats that can be bought through money.
    Buying medical seats with black money is a 90s cliche and doesn't work anymore. Yet somehow you thought It was a good way to show off.

    4) your hatred for EBM is obvious. It also means that your confirmation bias is obvious too. If you'd understand even a pinch of science and had known what homeopathy is, you would have known how ridiculous your statement "quack homeopath and homeopath who has done a 5 year degree course" is.

    This is a warning to all teenagers!!! dont treat your pimples. pimples are natural phenominon to show off that you have stepped into youth stage, at this age between 13 to 19 pimples will appear and will disappear after that. you can only avoid pimples by keeping face clean all the time, by washing with ayurvedic soap. and drink kirathe kaddi kashaya mixed with lemon juice every month as this purifies blood. and if you go for doctors simply you will waste your money thats all.

    He/She is a genuine ayurvedic doctor, but a fake allopathic doctor.
    Ayurvedic doctors are trained to give ayurvedic medicines, not allopathic medicines.

    National Medical Commission (or NMC) Bill, 2017 will implement the following in few years

    "The NMC Bill also allows practitioners of homoeopathy and Indian systems of medicine to prescribe allopathic medicine upon completion of a “bridge” course. The Bill marks a radical change in regulatory philosophy ".
