Beltangady, Aug 4: The policemen have concluded that the murder of a woman and her child on Saturday afternoon at Addahole was committed by the cousin of the woman's husband named Jayesh. They have now spread their net to nab the culprit.

Sowmya (23), wife of Lohit and her three-year-old son Jishnu were murdered at their residence, by stabbing them with a knife. They were asphyxiated by tying clothes around their necks before stabbing them. The woman was stabbed five times to her neck and abdomen region while the child suffered deep wounds on its back.

Jayesh, son of Lohit's paternal uncle, allegedly committed this heinous crime, when Lohit was away from home. The complaint registered with Uppinangadi police says that the culprit, besides murdering the mother-child duo, had taken away gold ornaments worth around Rs 8,000.

Things stored in the small room where the murder was committed, were found strewn around and blood was splattered on many items. It is believed that the murderer had attempted to rape the lady before murdering her. Lohit had recently started living in a small house away from his family. Lohit is a farmer and also works as toddy tapper during leisure.

Jayesh is widely known to be having a criminal background. Locals said that he lives with a Muslim woman after getting converted to her religion. He was recently seen around the area after a long gap, neighbourers said. Many people saw him that day in a tense mood after the murder. Lohit came back home at about 7.30 pm.

It is said that the accused was bailed out in a case of autorickshaw theft by Lohit and his brother Lava. Jayesh had tried to commit suicide by consuming poison three months back.

The bodies of the murdered, after conducting post mortem at Puttur, were released to the family members on Sunday August 3 evening. Puttur assistant commissioner of police Abhishek Goel is guiding rural circle inspector C R Ravish and police sub-inspector Ganapati Nayak in the investigations relating to this incident.
