World's largest solar park inaugurated in Pavagada, CM terms it 'eighth wonder'

Bengaluru, Mar 1 (Agencies): The world's largest solar park set up at an investment of Rs 16,500 crore at Pavagada in Karnataka's Tumakuru district was launched by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on March 1, 2018. The 2,000 MW park, named as 'Shakti Sthala', spans across 13,000 acres spread over five villages and is a benchmark in the unique people's participation in power model put on ground, according to officials.

The park’s development is anchored by the Karnataka Solar Power Development Corp. Ltd, an entity formed in March 2015 as a joint venture between Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd (KREDL) and Solar Energy Corp. of India (SECI).

The project has been executed within a record time of two years, with zero land acquisition, Siddaramaiah said. Moreover, the farmers who have leased out their land are reaping greater benefits with Rs 21,000 per acre being offered as rental, an amount which has the scope to grow by five per cent every two years, he said. The beneficiaries of this project were 2,300 Pavagada farmers, he said.

The chief minister said Karnataka has emerged as the third largest producer of renewable energy in the nation and was taking "bold strides" towards emerging as an energy surplus state.

"We have set the goal to source at least 20 per cent of people’s power requirements from renewable projects," he added.

The park will create employment and act as an incentive for natives and farmers to explore new opportunities of socio-economic growth in the region, state Energy Minister D K Shivakumar said.

“This ambitious project, spanning five villages, looks at farmers as the key partners, as also beneficiaries. Shakti Sthala is creating new job opportunities and economic growth leading to the prosperity of the people of Pavagada," he said. The state has witnessed an overall increase in capacity to 2,3379 MW as on January 2018, he said.

Shivakumar said 600 MW solar power generation has been commissioned during December 2017 and balance capacity of 1400 MW will be available by December this year. Earlier, a 648-mw power project set up by the Adani Green Energy, part of the Adani Group, in Tamil Nadu in 2016 was billed as the world's largest solar plant.

'Eighth wonder'

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who inaugurated the solar park, called it the 'eighth wonder of the world'.

He said with the commissioning of the solar park, the fortunes of Pavagada taluk now change. "The solar park has opened the gates for investors to come set up industries in the taluk," he added.

He also added that this was not his election speech. "I will come another day to expose the opposition parties, " he quipped.

Proud Project .and ....Nice to Know world largest .......if i were ......Instead of keeping those solar panels on Ground level ...the could have kept it on Elevated Structure ..so that the Land could be Used for Dual Purpose ...Example like Plant Nursery or Poultry Farm etc, etc .......because land is Pricey

absolutely( you have your own ideas, but steel required to increase the height of the structure is not worth housing kori's, dukhor's & vegetables. This is barren land and farmers are getting benefited with monthly income. farmers are the real project partners here. no water required for solar project. here in the us the new houses are built with optional solar infrastructure and now tesla which built electric cars & have mega battery plant & sending rockets to space is manufacturing solar roof tiles. Out of all the tiles some tiles are solar. So they are getting into housing project too. here some of the schools where they have roadside vehicle parking have been fitted with similar solar panels like pavagada & others where vehicle parking is inside the campus are fitted with dual use solar infrastructure cum parking.

This solar panel consuming lots of hectare should have to kept at elevated high structure so that land below is free to be utilized , only the costing will increase but it can well compensated by increasing productivity , otherwise these solar panel will be block the land usage for years together , so the
policy makers should give a sincere & serious thought and implement in future project of this kind

Solar scam report will come soon as it happened in Kerala before. 13000 acre fertile land is wasted and solar power is going to be out dated all over the world. They must have pocketed More than 10% out of Rs 16500 crores. I.e Rs 1500 crores. I have seen a viral video of angry farmers breaking solar panels with axes. Time to wake up atleast before election.

Before you fertile land, Why dont you viisit this place once!?. I have been to pavagada and virtually nothing grows there just because water is a scarcity there! Rains are highly erratic and grossly insufficient!. What you will grow in a land where you get sun for 11 months and rains barely of few days and where ground water too is as deep as 1000 feet or more!. Sitting in mangalore and commenting is very easy without even knowing the basic facts!. Solar park in mangalore is totally useless because 6 months it will be covered in clouds!

Narendra Modi while inaugurating Asia’s biggest solar power plant in Kankrej, Gujarat said“You can’t keep on living in the past,” address a crowd celebrating the opening of India’s largest solar energy farm in the north of the state.
But CM Siddaramaiah is much ahead of the time and into future of India inaugurated the world's largest solar park inaugurated in Pavagada.
This is the proof of 'Seedha Rupaiya Sarkar' who invested 'Seedha; for the citizens of this nation, while PM Modi's 'Mithron' are run from 'Gujarat Model.
It should be noted that his good governance MP for Udupi is the Minister of Power in former CM Yeddyurappa sarkar not even able to add single unit to the grid in her own tenure other than purchasing the power at exaggerated price. She is lightning fast to upload fake news on social media but zero in delivery.
Only difference for CM Siddaramaiah sarkar is ,he don't have friends like Ambani, Adani, Kothari, Modi's to praise his projects.
    Jai Karnataka! Jai Basavana
    Jai Hind

definitely^ it's of course eighth wonder and very useful wonder with clean energy. uninterrupted power supply is the need of the hour. in addition to help industries and businesses to work more productively the household would also benefit, as uninterrupted power supply is very much needed to preserve meat, vegetables & other food items of the refrigerator not getting spoiled which is required to maintain good health. here in the us solar panels have been installed in most of the schools so that don't have to draw much power from the grid and transfer to the grid any excess power.
