Mangaluru: Video recording to curb drunk driving, contain traffic violations – police

Mangaluru, Mar 10: "Video recording will be done, case will be registered and strict action will be taken against people who drink alcohol and drive. In addition, video recording will be done of drivers of buses, trucks, cars, auto rickshaw, two-wheelers and all other vehicles, who violate traffic rules," said T R Suresh, police commissioner.

He was speaking in response to the calls of citizens of Mangaluru in the weekly 'Police phone-in programme' that took place on Friday, March 9.

Public alleged that there was no improvement in the behaviour of the private city bus personnel even after they were trained with regards to the driving and dealing with the public. Responding to this the commissioner said, "No notices will be issued in future. Video recording of the incidents will be done and cases will be registered based on the video,"

Replying to the query of spilling of water on the road by trucks carrying fish, the commissioner told that the arrangement will be made to check the fish trucks at the exit point at Old Bunder.

The commissioner also told that they have received several complaints with regards to the inconvenience caused to the residents of Balmatta New Road, due to the traffic rule of making Jyoti Junction-Falnir Balmatta New Road as one way. He assured that the traffic department will look into relaxing this rule.

One of the callers complained that NURM buses are not plying after 7.30 pm. The commissioner told that the same will be conveyed to the KSRTC officials to do the needful.

This was the 74th phone-in programme in which a total number of 32 calls were received.

Deputy commissioners of police, Hanumantharaya and Uma Prashanth, assistant commissioners of police, Manjunath Shetty and Valentine D'Souza, traffic police inspectors Shivaprakash, Kumaraswamy and Chandra, assistant sub-inspector Yousuf, head constable Purushothama, Rajavarma Ballal, president of Canara bus owners' association and joint secretary of Dakshina Kannada district bus owners' association, Ramachandra Pilar were present on the occasion.

    traffic police in concerned only of making money by putting fines..... other day when i parked my vehichle at kankanady just for 5 min and dat too i had parked ryt in front of da traffic police where he was standing aside he saw me and i saw him too... and after 5 min when i came back he is telling ur vehichle photo has been taken case is been registered for NO PARKING .... my question here is nwe wheather the traffic police is only concerned of making money by putting fines ??.... if he was a goiod samaritan he could have told me wen parking Itself dis is no parking zone ..And dat too no sign board of no parking is put then hwe can he fine.

    Instead of taxing more to citizens, the Corporations like, RTA, Police, Municipality must levy heavy fines that should pinch the payer and enable him/her avoid such lapse in future. The money can be used for public developmental work, like installing CC TVs, Signals, Camaras etc...

    In my comments which have already appeared in this media, I overlooked to state that the levy of fines is very very low. The fines should be enhanced to at least Rs.500/- for the lowest offence. For the second offence the fines should be doubled. I would appreciate if the authorities take a serious note of this suggestion.

    It is not out of place to mention that fines for the lowest offence in U.S.A are at a level of $.150/- amounting to over Rs.8,500/-

    Defaulters driving licence and vehicle impound for certain days. Along with that havey fine. On last page of their RC record what mistake they have done and how many time they have punished him. Best of luck to our traffic dept.

    Kudos to you Mr. Suresh. You are fulfilling a long felt need. You are not only supporting a good cause but you are saving lives. It would be a good idea to hold meetings with the DRIVING PUBLIC and inculcate into the concept of SAFE DRIVING.

    In U.S.A. sometimes defaulting drivers are required to surrender the driving licences. They are asked to attend classes where the concepts of SAFE DRIVING are highlighted and lessons imparted to the erring drivers. Thereafter the licences are returned to the drivers and their driving is observed.

    It would not be a bad idea for the department to enroll TRAFFIC WARDENS TO WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT .

    Useless or use full system i can't understand!. One of my friend Doctor who has no bike and does not no riding bike got notice from traffic police saying he violated traffic rules by not wearing helmet. What do you say about it. In another incident happen to my relative who sold her car two years back received notice recently saying that the driver of the said car was not wearing belt but the notice served to the old (first ) owner (my relative ) not new owner (second owner)of the car. It means RTO authorities are sleeping over the registration file. One more incident one person got two notices violating traffic law same car number two types of violation at two different places of thirty kilometers at the same time. How is it possible can any one explain it.

    It is possible that two violations can happen in the same day. For the timing, it is possible that timer is not synchronized. Normally, this kind of system will be time synchronized with GPS timer. If anybody has any grievance , then they can approach police control room. Police will show the photos of the vehicle. Such system is used all over the world. Secondly, when the vehicle is driven by your friends/family member, then the fine will be charged on the vehicle owner since fine is charged to the vehicle number plate. Don't blame the system. Support them so that they can improve the system, if necessary.

    Car driver or the owner of the car should surrender his car key to the hotel/bar manager before he starts consuming liquor and now the bar manager responsibility to reach him at his place or residence.Easy method to solve problem .

    Take driving test according to the Traffic rules parameters without any influence and see how many will pass the test. I am sure 70% - 80% driver's license holder will not even pass 1st level of test.
    Craziest drivers are filled on the road in India, thanks to the corrupt system.
