Udupi, Aug 18: The Konkani poetry session conducted by the Kavita Trust at Udyavar on Sunday, August 17, once again proved that people are ignorant of the marvelous strength poetry has in transporting them to a peaceful world of happiness and joy.

It was the sixth such event organized this year by Kavita Trust, which was established for the promotion and promulgation of Konkani poetry. The earlier sessions were held at Mangalore, Bantwal, Dubai, Barkur, and Taccode.

Robert Fernandes welcomed the guests while Melvyn Rodrigues, president, Kavita Trust, gave a brief account of the various activities of the forum. In his speech, he explained why people need to study poetry and the delight that poetry brings to its creators. Poetry can be therapeutic and bring in psychological changes in human beings, Rodrigues said.

Poet Andrew D'Çunha, trustee, Kavita Trust, conducted the poetry session. He recited a poem by Mother Teresa, which had brought a change of heart in a businessman of Kolkata, who had initially been skeptical about her.  D'Cunha dedicated the poetry session to the poets of Udyavar—late Henry D'Silva (Raan Udyavar) and Saver Mendos. He also recited one poem each of theirs.

Micheal D'Souza, Flossy Teacher, Godfrey D'Souza, and Arun Danty, spoke on behalf of the audience and appreciated the efforts of the organizers for this first ever poetry session in Udyavar. They termed listening to some of the finest poets in the session, as the rarest of experiences.

Congratulations to Kavitha trust for conducting Konkani poetry session at Udyavar. Kudos to Mrs & Mr Robert Fernandes. It is nice to have such sessions in our native place as most of our elders were highly talented in konkani poetry, drama and comedy.

I wish to again mention few of our great poets and artists of ester years - Henry D'Silva, Saver Mendos, Albert Barnes, Richard D'Silva who were the great heroes in those days. Other talents such as drama, acting and poetry also kept alive by our Udyavar community. To name a few, Catherine Rodrigues, Robert Fernandes, Johny Mariabhoomi, Joseph Cardoza, Richard Machado have done their best to Konkani. Congratulations to all of them and look forward for many more such events to take place in Udyavar. God bless
