Vijayapura: Angered Veerashaiva Math heads give open call to defeat Congress

Daijiworld Media Network - Vijayapura (SP)

Vijayapura, Mar 26: Angered by the fact that Congress party doggedly pursued the agenda of declaring Lingayat as a separate religion, heads of various Veerashaiva Maths in the state openly declared war against the party.

They called upon the people to inflict defeat on chief minister, Siddaramaiah, minister, M B Patil, and five other ministers who worked together to break the community. "By falsely claiming that Lingayat religion is being created to accord religious minority tag to this community to achieve its overall progress, these leaders, backed by political interests and for the benefit of educational institutions being run by them, took the step of breaking the religion. Siddaramaiah and other leaders took decisions unilaterally, and therefore to teach a lesson to them, we should unitedly vote for the BJP," they said in their addresses.

Jagadguru Dr Prasannaveera Someshwara Shivacharya Swamiji of Rambhapuri Math, Dr Chandrashekhar Shivacharya of Kashi Peetam, Dr Channasiddarama Panditaradhya Shivacharya of Shreeshaila Peetam, and president of Hospet-Halkeri Math and Shjivayoga Mandir, Dr Sanganabasava Mahaswamiji provided to leadership to the Veerashaiva Lingayat convention organized on Sunday March 25 at the Darbar Maidan in the city. The spiritual heads of various Maths felt the situation is so critical that they are forced to a take a plunge into politics.

Dr Prasannaveera Someshwara Shivacharya Swamiji of Rabhapuri Math noted that minister, M B Patil, and some ministers had brought together lacs of people by promising to give minority status to Lingayat, and told them that a separate religion is being created. He said that these leaders have failed in providing reservation facility to the Lingayat, but have succeeded in getting reservation benefit for their educational institutions, thus duping the people who they lured by using religion. He also accused Justice Nagamohandas Committee of preparing a government-sponsored report without considering historic documents. He also accused chief minister, Siddaramaiah, and a few of his ministers of speaking lightly of the religious Pancha Peethas.

He threatened to file suit against retired IAS officer, Dr S M Jamdar and others who have been passing derogatory remarks about the Pancha Peetas.

Vamadeva Mahanta Swamiji said that it is necessary to defeat minister, M B Patil and other ministers who planned to break the religion together. He felt that Congress needs to be taught a lesson for interfering in the matter of Veerashaiva Lingaya religion, and regretted that BLDE institution founded by a great leader like Banthanala Swamiji is now becoming a puppet in the hands of vested interests. Dr Mahadeva Shivacharya Swmaiji of Babaleshwar said that M B Patil will face the curse for breaking the religion. He accused Congress leaders of being ungrateful and therefore advised people to politically teach the party a fitting lesson.

Veerashaivas are just a sub-caste among Lingayats. They have no much base in North Karnataka where Lingayats dominate. So the call of these Veerashaiva swamijis to defeat Congress will not have much effect in election in North Karnataka.

please don't blame anybody else... who recommended, who triggered ... nothing matters here. It's Siddu who took it forward and hurt the Hindu sentiments. Already Siddu is carrying a very very bad name and perception by Hindu community for all his Anti-Hindu actions and initiatives. So, it was Siddu's duty to keep quite and not to attempt to hurt them further. Now it's peak and we hindus are really really hurt seeing Siddu and his party initiatives, almost all the Anti-Hindu ones... So, we have decided to send them home this time and give BJP 5 years to see how it will go, especially with Modi leading at center.

Jaimini get your facts right before expressing bhakti. The same Swamijis under the garb of Veerashaiva Mahasabha had approached the then Union Home Ministry as well as PM Manmohan Singh asking to accord separate religion status to Veerashaiva-Lingayats in July 2013. BJP president BSY and all BJP Lingayat MLAs and MPs had signed the recommendation letter too. Weren't they dividing Hindus then? Why this U-turn now? Why BSY is silent on this issue all throughout? If this amounts to dividing Hindus, why the Central government is not rejecting the recommendation of teh Karnataka government. What are they waiting for? Elections?

To be frank Lingayats had never been part of Hindu religion because they rejected Vedic rituals and practices and also the Varnas. Those who are out of the hierarchy of Varnas are out of Hinduism too. Since Basavanna's time to almost 1891, Lingayats were considered separate religion. It was in 1891 Census that British clubbed it as a caste of Hindus. If you check the birth cirtificates or school certificates of Lingayats of those times, they clearly have the religion as 'Lingayat'. But it was post 1900 that religion column got the entry as 'Hindu-Lingayat'. These are what the records that scholar Jamdar and others have researched and put in together. So what's there to divide when they are already out of the Hindu hierarchy? And it's not the government that initiated this process but this demand has been there for almost 900 years now and every now and then, it has reached crecendo. The request came from Lingayats themselves which the government forwarded to the Central government. What's wrong in it? When something drastic of this sort takesn place 'unity of Hindus' comes to the fore. Otherwise we are happy staying divided as Brahmins, Dalits, Vokkaligas, Lingayats etc. Lord Shiva hasn't found entry in Atha Maths of Udupi so far and Pejawar Swamiji is advising on keeping Lingayats who worship Istalinga into Hindu fold?

It's the work of the government. Central government has the right to do so. Have you forgotten Gujarat government granted Minority status to Jains in Gujarat in 2016? Why no one spoke against it then? Central government has the Constitutional right to do so.

Mr Santhosh kulal Hinduism is not a static religion with some fixed rules for life. The caste system which was prevalent then amongst Hindus is diminishing. It is only the politicians who are latching on to this and keep it alive for political gains. There are many communities of tulunadau where spirits called daivas are worshipped. The other gods of Hindus came much later. By this token Bunts and Billavas can claim that they are not Hindus to corner benefits of minorities.

“politics is the last resort for the scoundrel” G B Shaw. The quote should now be debatable as the last resort or the first resort. This quote is applicable to everyone irrespective of any parties. This goes to show if everything is fair in love and war, then why not in the love and war game of politics. Bottom line is the common man has to decide, whether he prefers love or war.

This is not divide and rule. The demand has originated from the Lingayat community itself for separate religion which even Yeddy endorsed with his signature in 2013. Now even Kodavas are demanding minority religion status. Also Maharashtrian Lingayats are demanding separate status.
If it is divide and rule why are Lingayats not opposing but demanding separate status ? Why blame the Congress party. Even now centre can reject.
