Election Commission sets up panel to probe Karnataka poll date leak

New Delhi, Mar 27 (PTI): The Election Commission this evening set up a committee of senior officials to probe the leak of the poll schedule for Karnataka before it was announced by the Chief Election Commissioner earlier today.

The committee, which has been asked to submit its report within a week, would also suggest steps needed to prevent any such eventuality in future.

In a statement, the poll watchdog referred to a tweet by BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya in which he had put out the election date minutes before CEC O P Rawat actually announced the schedule at a press conference.

Malviya tweeted that polls would be held on May 12 and counting will take place on May 18. While he was correct about the date of polling, he got the counting date wrong which will actually take place on May 15.

"The Commission immediately directed that the matter be probed and necessary and effective action taken. Accordingly, Commission has constituted a committee of senior officers of Election Commission to investigate the matter and give its report within seven days.

"The Committee would also suggest steps needed to prevent any such eventuality in future. The Committee set up by the Commission has already sought information from the concerned media organisations and individuals, the statement read.

It said Malviya, in another tweet, had attributed a news channel as his source.

In his press conference to announce the poll schedule, Rawat had described the leak as a "very serious" issue that merited a probe and "stringent action".

He said people can conjecture but noted that as information has been "leaked", the Election Commission will probe the matter and take "stringent action" both "legally and administratively".

    WOW!!!
So people of India knows whose hand in the leak of election date and tampering of EVMs. that means everything in under their control not with independent authority.
If anybody/any party pulls support from NDA part then next day IT/CBI raid.
IT department raid only for non BJP ministers.
    Then NIA investigation.

Please bring ballet papers for elections. We donot have hope in EVM.

If election from ballet paper congress will win for sure. If it is from EVM BJP will win. So EC is not bringing ballet papers.

EC is playing big drama, if EC wants true to his position he should conduct election of Karnataka by ballot papers and permanently ban EVM's. UP Gujarat also poll survey was predicted BJP loosing heavily due to the demonetisation impact. However with the help of EC and EVM's BJP winning everywhere. If any parties truly want to win elections against BJP the voting must be by ballot papers. People never voted BJP after demonetisation, they won purely by manipulating EVM's.

    People,

Indian Election Commission is the refuge for retired Government Babu's...like Rajya Sabha for Politicians(Remember O?)....

All over the world( Including Pakistan!!!) votes are counted in the polling booths only after polling closes and results are tabulated in the counting centers...through secure internet...

Why counting should be done 3 days after the polls???...only these good for nothing Commission can answer....perhaps these morns theory if somebody takes a box and runs away...re poll could be conducted before counting...this is an absurd argument....if somebody disrupts polling they should be shot and killed...period...

I don't think these EC member's are capable of doing anything pragmatic...except taking their salary and conducting 'Press Meats'.... In my opinion these guys are not even fit to walk a dog...

These good for nothings should be sent to Pakistan...to learn how polls should be conducted....PATHETIC....Ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch.........

This is absolute drama by the EC. First the EC should try to get to use ballot paper before manipulating the EVM's in favour of the losing party the BJP. When the PM can ban notes of Rs.500 and Rs.1000 why cannot he ban the EVM's. The PM knows that the EVM's are useful and be manipulated.

Mr Rawat why are you so distressed and behave like a blind Bhakt when Amit Malviya (name very synonymous with Amit Shah) has peeped into your bedroom and tweeted those dates. Amit Shah has himself admitted publicly that BJP in Karnataka is No.1 Corrupt party with CM Yeddy as its head. Also BJP 's own survey has predicted BJP will lose very badly in Karnataka. So, relax unless you are looking to give clean chit to BJP which will again badly destroy your reputation.

This is all drama, to make one retired multi-billionaire babu a job and earn little more money.

How many judicial commissions we had? Thousands. How many probe teams we had? Thousands. How much tax payers money spend? Billions. What is the networth of them in terms of gain, may be 0.0001%.

The EC is under the influence of Modi Govt., retired babu who will preside over probe is going to be someone friendly. So, end result - nothing. Largely, all Govt., organization made itself accountable only to Modi Govt., not to people it serves. So, expect nothing.
