Karnataka elections: Politicians shower freebies on voters, cases of poll code violation filed

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru/Belagavi

Bengaluru/Belagavi, Mar 30: With just over a month remaining for the all-important Karnataka Assembly elections, politicians are busy raining freebies on voters in different parts of the state in an effort to woo them. While sarees are being distributed to woo women voters, the youth are being lured by gifts such as laptops, wrist watches and helmets, among others.

Senior BJP leader Aravind Limbavali reportedly distributed ISI-mark helmets with a sticker of Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Yeddyurappa and himself at Mahadevapura constituency in the city on Thursday.

In Hebbal constituency, the sitting BJP MLA Y A Narayanaswamy had distributed hotboxes and separate dustbins to segregate wet and dry waste to residents. He also had his name printed on the freebies. Meanwhile, MLC Byrathi Suresh, Congress ticket aspirant of the same constituency is said to have distributed mixer grinders among the economically weaker sections in Hebbal.

BJP MLA Sathish Reddy of Bommanahalli constituency and Congress MLA Priyakrishna from Govindarajanagar Constituency have distributed freebies even before the election dates were announced.

BBMP assistant revenue officer Uma landed in trouble after she distributed free laptops to students after the code of conduct had set in. She claimed she was not aware of the poll code, when questioned.

In Belagavi, pressure cookers were being distributed by Water Resources Minister MB Patil in Babaleshwar. BJP MLA Sanjay Patil’s supporters had reportedly distributed saris and silver coins.

Belagavi President of Karnataka Congress Women’s Wing Lakshmi Hebbalkar reportedly went around distributing gas stoves. Party insiders say that over the past two months Hebbalkar alone has distributed sarees and gas stoves to over 15,000 people in the constituency.

One Congress source in Belagavi says that majority of voters in Belagavi are Marathi speakers and are inclined to MES (Maharashtra Ekikarna Samiti). Hence, luring voters with gifts is the only option.

Meanwhile, the election authorities have booked several cases of violation of the model code of conduct. Chief electoral officer Sanjiv Kumar booked Devarahippargi legislator A S Patil (Nadahalli) for distributing sarees.

If the poor get benefits in the name of elections, let it happen. As all political parties do it and after the elections the poor barely get any importance. The smart thing to do would be to take the so called gifts from the parties and just vote for whomever they feel is best for them and not based on their gifts.

I appeal all Kannadiga voters to accept the 'freebies' and vote for wise candidates who are clean and pro development and did not like divide the society for personal gains.Like Delhi citizens who accepted the freebies from BJP, loot this leaders with more demands.
The declared assets of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) jumped by 627 percent from Rs 122.93 crore to over Rs 893 crore between 2004-05 and 2015-16, according to an analysis by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). BJP’s donations are more than twice the aggregate declared by Congress,NCP,CPI,CPM; BSP declared NIL donations above Rs 20,000.
The ruling BJP is the richest among India’s seven national parties, having declared assets worth nearly Rs 894 crore in 2015-16.The reserve fund of the BJP increased by 700% through the 11-year period, as opposed to 169% of the Congress. The BJP received the lion’s share – Rs 705.81 crore – of Rs 956.77 crore that corporate houses donated to five national parties between 2012-13 and 2015-16.According to report released by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) on Wednesday, in 2015-16, the BJP raised 80.7 percent of its total income from unknown sources.
It is know bargain for vote from parties who have looted India through it's crony capitalist who in turn escaped with bank loot.
The short point here is: more than demonetisation, purging political parties from the practice of enjoying donations from unknown sources can be a much bigger move. PM Modi must begin this process from within his own party and make others fall in line.
Demonetisation and black money won't help. PM Modi must first account for BJP’s poll funds.
