Mangaluru: Bishop inaugurates 'Akshaya Dhama' public fridge, cloth bank

Mangaluru, Apr 1: Bishop of Mangaluru diocese Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza inaugurated 'Akshaya Dhama', a public fridge and cloth bank for needy, here at the Bishop’s House on Easter Sunday, April 1.

 Addressing the gathering, Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza said, "Today, we have symbolically inaugurated 'Akshaya Dhama', a fridge and cloth bank for the poor. Anyone who is in need can come here and take food and clothes. I urge the public to be kind-hearted to donate food for the public fridge and cloth to the cloth bank so that the needy can benefit,”

“Jesus helped the poor and showed concern towards them. We need to help the poor so that they overcome their difficulties,” he added.

 PRO of Mangaluru diocese William Menezes said, "We had announced this project during Christmas. ‘Akshaya Dhama’ will start functioning from May 17 to serve the poor and needy,”

Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu, Fr Henry Sequeira, Fr Richard Coelho, M P Noronha, Marcel Monteiro, Elias Fernandes were present among others.

    "Akshaya Dhama" is a genuine project that will benefit tens of thousands of needy people of Mangalore, regardless of faith. Whenever people are in need of additional food or clothing, they can always make their way towards this place and avail of the privileges made available to them. In America, these kind of place are very common. Many of the places are open for 24 hours so that whenever you have someone need of clothes or food, one can always find their way to Akshaya Dhama at odd hours, if they do not wish to be seen by many others.

    There are so many thousands of Mangalorean visit home some time. They can always leave behind lots of their surplus clothes or food for "Akshaya Dhama" and return to their place of origin with a smiling face having fulfilled their little secret desire of life.

    "Akshaya Dhama" is to be treated aa a "noble place of charity". Lots of volunteers can be utilized for this project so long as those volunteers do not possess the "what's in it for me" desire concealed in them.

    Sure our mangalore is changing and also for a good reason we hope all the churches start this programme so that poor people do not go thirsty, hungry or without clothes but at the same time we generous people should give a helping hand then only this will work well

    This gesture is incomparable from Moral Policing, Love Jihad, Anti Romeo Squad etc etc. This is real selfless service to the public without discrimination to religion or status. The political parties should closely observe these noble deeds and learn from it the word Service and Public Servant.
