Mangaluru, Apr 2: The district police observed Police Flag Day and Welfare Day at police grounds here on Monday, April 2.
IPS (probationary) Akshay and RPI district Armed Reserve Police, Ganesh led the parade. Six contingents of the police force, namely the Karnataka State Reserve Police, district Armed Reserve Police, Mangaluru city civil police, district civil police, women police and traffic police accompanied by police band took part in the celebration.
Addressing the gathering, retired PSI Prakash Kumar said, "I have served the police department for 41 years facing several challenges. Today, we have to remember the sacrifice and service of police personnel. Several challenges come our way and we have to face them positively to maintain law and order of our respective regions. I thank the city police commissionerate for inviting me to this programme."
IGP (western range) Arun Chakravathy said, "Today is an important day for our department. Retired officers will be honoured today whom we remember for their service and sacrifice. We have even introduced beat system which is a binding force for us. I urge everyone to work to strengthen it."
Three top performers in SSLC, PUC and engineering were awarded scholarships in memory of former DySP the late Bola Pushparaj Shetty.
Sister of the late Bola Pushparaj Shetty, Nalini S Bhandary handed over a cheque of Rs 25,000 for the welfare of police personnel.
Sister of former DySP late Bola Pushparaj Shetty, Nalini S Bhandary recalled the days of former DySP late Bola Pushparaj Shetty and said, "It is a privilege to be part of this Flag Day event. From the last 12 years in the memory of my brother, I have been distributing scholarships to students who have performed well in examinations and also donating money for the welfare of police personnel."
Retired PSI Prakash Kumar released police flags which were later sold to the members present. The money collected from these flags will be used for the welfare of police personnel.
As many as 59 police personnel who retired in the year 2017-18 were honoured on the occasion.
Police commissioner T R Suresh welcomed the gathering, and DCP (law and order) Hanumantharaya rendered the vote of thanks.
