Mangaluru, Apr 3: Director of Mangaluru International Airport V V Rao on Tuesday April 3 clarified on the viral video regarding overcharging by airport parking attendants and said that the video was two months old and stringent action had already been taken against the parking attendant concerned and the contractor.

Addressing a press meet here, V V Rao said, "The video which is doing the rounds in social media is two months old and we have taken stringent action against the parking attendant concerned, besides imposing heavy fine. The parking is manned by a Mumbai-based contractor. We have received repeated complaints from the public, on which we have acted and terminated the attendant according to the clauses mentioned in the contract.

"The Airports Authority of India will come up with a new parking policy, which will also the cancel the present contractor and tender will be called for a new policy. Here the rates will be rationalised," he added.

"We have listed out the complaints received and sent a letter to the contractors regarding the violations. We have imposed a penalty of Rs 2.58 lac on the contractors," he said.

"For the first time in MIA, in association with Srinivas Institute we conducted grooming classes in the month of November for car drivers and parking attandants. Circulation of such videos and misbehaviour with passengers will tarnish not only the image of MIA but also Mangaluru city," he added.

As a bonus for passengers arriving at the airport, the director announced that on Tuesday, parking at the airport will be free of cost for all. "This will incur a huge loss for the contractors. They can appeal if they can provide proper documents, or else the contract will be terminated altogether," he said.

On the other issues, as already reported in these columns, the director announced that Mangaluru International Airport bagged the country's cleanest airport award in a survey conducted as part of the 'Swachh Bharath Abhiyan'.

"The award was received on April 1 in New Delhi on the occasion of the 23rd anniversary celebration of the Airports Authority of India. Officials of the Airports Authority of India had visited Mangaluru International Airport a month ago and verified the cleanliness at the airport terminal, parking area, toilets, commercial shops, customer lounge and road connectivity and given grades accordingly. Mangaluru International Airport secured the highest points in this survey and stood first in the country.

"Safety and security of the passengers are the main concerns of the airport for which we have put in place several security systems and introduced safety measures. We have even signed a contract to provide free Wi-Fi for passengers, which will soon be commissioned. Airports Authority of India has decided to allow an app-based cab service. They had earlier done a pilot study on this app in five airports in the first phase, and received positive response. In the second phase, Mangaluru international Airport will be commissioned with the app-based cab service," he informed.

He further said, "Mangaluru airport is witnessing exponential growth. In the financial year 2017-18, we handled 23.5 lac passengers compared to 17.5 lac passengers last year. Domestic cargo handled from April 2016 to March 2017 was 3,271 metric tonnes, while from April 2017 to March 2018, the domestic cargo was 3,297.92 metric tonnes and international cargo was 2,159.53 metric tonnes. We are extending the terminal building which will include a new arrival hall being built at a cost of Rs 132 crore. The work is expected to start from June this year.

"Several initiatives have been taken up to cater to the needs of women and child passengers, such as providing child care rooms and installation of sanitary napkin vending machine. We are upgrading the existing facilities in the airport to meet international standards. We have even introduced a practice to welcome the passengers at the terminal building with jasmine fragrance through AC so that passengers can enter the airport on a happy note," said V V Rao.

Airport has a big Mafia on Taxi business. The most expensive taxi fare around India is in Mangalore. This mafia business is going on for last several years in co-operation with RTO and Airport management support. Public should put an end to the Taxi fare charged by taxi drivers or else Airport should provide public bus service to the city like any other Airports in India. When other states can do such an arrangement why Mangalore can't do. Is it not purely mafia business in Mangalore Airport.

It is high time we got rid of these people issuing tickets. Go for auto tellers wherein you drive up to the entrance & take a ticket. Once the pick-up/drop off is completed, then drive to the exit gate, insert the ticket & pay the charge that is stated. End of story. This will put an end to the tamasha. I recall a couple of years back this company manipulated the clocks between the gates so that all vehicles had to pay the toll. The clocks were not synchronized. Even now they purposely argue with a vehicle at the front to purposely delay the vehicles at the rear & then say you have to pay toll. Get rid of them. The gates can be covered by CCTV.

One can notice that the attitude is such that any airport with less airlines operating & with less people using the airport with AAI operating, people need to pay more money for air ticket & other airport services.
Lost revenue in less aircraft movements is made up with taxi's. So the people have to pay more for using AAI operated airports with less quality service
People can notice that, there isn't even a word about the runway. Only talk about taxiway, taxi parking & taxi stand.
I have used Bengaluru airport so many times and there is no hassle to reach one's destination because it's being operated by a private company.

Travelling through MIA has a mixed feelings. The passengers are treated like culprits at the check points by some of the staff with ghetto attitudes and slum dwellers like appearance. When you enter the plane, the passengers are greeted by beautiful ladies with Namaskar gesture. All is forgiven when you are seated on the plane. Then there are some unruly passengers treating the Flight Attendants as their domestic help.

We all need to be civilized, especially the airport staff who need a special training in guest service and people skills. Airport should employ only the certified training staff. Airport security of passenger is improving after boarding the plane, but it should also improve before entering and exiting the Airports with trained staff.

    'Slum dweller like appearance'?
Just because someone doesn't have the privilege to groom oneself and look better, slum dwellers should not be made a standard for comparison.
'Untidy appearance', 'unwelcome appearance' would be more appropriate term to be used by an educated person commenting on an article written in a website with worldwide readership.

    Dear Mr. Roy Pinto,

Smiling as a gesture of civility, warmth and friendliness is not universal. India is a nation of humility, we fold our hands humbly and say Namaste. Japanese and Koreans bow as a sign of greeting without loaded emotions just as we Indians do. I may be wrong, smiling overtly may not be a cultural trait for us Indians. For example, wedding is a happy occasion and the Indian brides barring a minority of modern brides tend not to smile for their wedding pictures, also could be a sign of shyness. We are also a society of many uncertainties in life with myriads of personal and societal problems in and around us, these problems might impact happiness, if smile is a precursor to happiness we sure are in short supply?? Why would you think Russians do not sport their teeth as much as the Americans do? Impact of decades of communist rule of the past, curbing their freedom of speech and their very existence or is it cultural? Just a thought.

Studies suggest smiling individuals are happier and smiling fosters interpersonal communication (Journal of Nonverbal Behavior). Our own Dr. D.V. Gundappa said, Naguvu Sahajada Dharma, Naguva Kelutha Naguvuathishayada Dharma, Naguva Nagisuva Nagisi Baaluva Varava veege Neenu Beedikollu Manku Thimma.

Louis Armstrong’s song reminds me of the verse “smile and the world smiles with you”. Warmth and civility are reciprocal and they work both ways. India is emerging as a global society with commercial and scientific entrepreneurs, smiling may not be a bad etiquette after all at least in the business sense.

It’s not just the parking that’s an issue in mangalore International Airport , but also the food courts inside the airport. Most of them serve stale food and extremely over priced . Plus the staff at these counters also very arrogant and rude. Sometimes I feel Airport’s in india are a place to get bullied by all for paying a huge price to travel - it’s no more a luxury , but a place to get humilated by all . I had a writing to the airport manager about this long back . Plus there is a need to have Uber and Ola taxis in the airport ... the existing taxis are a rip off .

Recently I took my wife to the airport on a bike just to show her the airport as she is from a village and has never seen an Airport ever. The attendant at the entrance forced me to pay for the bike parking along with the ticket. I told him - I am not going to park my bike as I will just exit from the other side in next 5 minutes. But he was very adamant and I didn't wanted to take any chances by arguing with these goons as I was with my wife. He forced me to pay Rs. 15 for just 5 mins that I spent inside the Airport campus.
Very embarrassing situation it was for me who was too excited to see the airport for the first time ever in her life.

I request the authority to change this behavior by the parking attendants and make a strict rule of collecting the fees only at the EXIT.

Though not related to the subject of this press article, it is very surprising to note that app based taxi services such as Uber and Ola are not allowed to operate in Mangalore Airport, with the result that the incoming passengers end up paying hefty taxi fares to the Airport taxis to reach their destinations. Just to give an idea, if one has to go from Mangalore Airport to Udupi during the night time, the fare charged is INR 1,650, which is higher than the Bangalore – Mangalore sector airfare in non-peak season! If authorities in airports like Mumbai, allow all these app based taxis such as Uber, Ola, Meru are allowed as passengers can avail affordable means of transport to reach their destinations, what is the problem for Mangalore Airport authorities allow such facilities in Mangalore Airport . It looks like a big Airport taxi mafia is operating and Mangalore and Airport authorities are helpless? Why can’t Airport authorities take some corrective steps in this regard. Airport Director can help on this?
