    Thu, Aug 28 2008

Fr. Lawrence D’Souza- a Seasoned Administrator I am happy to write this short note on Rev. Fr. Lawrence D’Souza. He is an unassuming person though full of talents and high qualifications. In his 31 years of ministry as a priest, he has held high posts in the fields of pastoral work, education and hospital administration. He has given a touch of perfection to whatever office he worked in. Fr. Lawrence is a good speaker, good thinker with a wide outlook.

Above all he has an amiable personality, a kind heart and concern for the poor and afflicted. His friendly attitude welcomes everyone who approaches him. He passed BSc degree with distinction, won first place in M.A.(Philosophy),and two gold medals in the law degree (LLB). He also has a degree in administration from Fordham university of USA. As Administrator of Fr. Muller hospital and medical college at Mangalore, he was the key figure to deal with the Karnataka government and the Rajiv Gandhi university of Karnataka. Above all, he has a pleasant personality and welcoming attitude which makes it easy for all those who want to approach him. Our country needs more persons like Fr. Lawrence D’Souza, for efficiency in management and progress of Institutions. I wish Fr. Lawrence every success in his position as Director of ST. JOHNS NATIONAL ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES. REV. MSGR DR. ALEXANDER F. D’SOUZA Senior Priests Home St. Anthony’s Ashram -Manglaroe

Lawrence in some language must mean-generous, decisive, clear thinker, level headed, a people's person. These qualities and more is what Fr. Lawrence brings to his new ministry in St. John's. A man of varied experience he carries with him the experiences of service both as an Assistant in a Parish, as a Parish Priest, many years as head of the Diocesan Board of Education Mangalore and even more years at Fr Muller's College and Hospital. Equipped with a degree in Law and a Doctorate in Hospital Management he comes to St John's as a person who lives life to the full and believes in helping others do the same.

Having known him personally for twenty years and more, his thoughtfulness and concern for those in need and in pain more especially a patient, a co-worker or a colleague is how Fr Lawrence comes across to me. He makes friends easily and his friendship endures. I was closely associated with him when he was Manager of the CBE, and I soon discovered that he is a no nonsense person well able to size up a situation and follow it up with the appropriate decisive action. It was a pleasure to work with him. As I write this I am reminded of the words of the Prophet Micah a true disciple acts justly, loves tenderly and walks humbly with his God. I have known Rev. Father Lawrence D’ Souza rather intimately for over two and a half decades. We had first met in 1982 when he was handling matters connected with Education at the Mangalore Diocese and I operated as the Commissioner Public Instruction and later as Secretary Education of the Government of Karnataka. Though he is very many years younger than me we became very good friends. I admire Fr. Lawrence for his no-nonsense approach in solving problems with perfect neutrality and integrity and after considering the ground realities.

He enjoys a tremendous reputation among his peers as also the laity. He had turned out a wonderful stint as the administrative head of Father Muller’s Hospital in Mangalore. No wonder, as the right choice, he has been picked up for an onerous and challenging job as the Director of St. John’s Hospital at Koramangala, Bangalore. As a dear friend of long standing I wish Rev. Father Lawrence D’ Souza the very best in discharging his heavyweight duties. May his tribe increase and may he rise to greater glories. I got acquainted with Fr. Lawrence D’Souza in the year 1998, when I was posted as Superintendent of Police in Mangalore district. Then Home Secretary, Mr. Philipose Mathais had come to Mangalore on an official meeting. After the meeting was over, he invited me to accompany him to Father Muller Hospital for lunch. I was a little uncomfortable with the idea of having lunch at a hospital but as it would have been highly inappropriate and discourteous of me to refuse the invitation of the Home Secretary I had no option but to accept the invitation.

Before that meeting, my idea of a priest was of someone with very serious demeanours, in whose presence one had to be solemn and formal. But to my delight, I found both the fathers very warm and informal. After that first interaction I visited Fr. Lawrence quite often. I found him to be a caring person, a gracious host with a great sense of humour. He has an optimistic outlook and with his positive attitude he also enthuses people around him to work better and achieve their objectives. One such example is getting a Medical College affiliated to Fr. Muller Hospital despite fierce competition from other rival institutes. The standing and the reputation that Fr. Muller Hospital has in Mangalore today, is mostly because of the passion and zeal with which Fr. Lawrence had nurtured it during its formative years. After holding a high position in Fr. Muller, he was assigned duty as a Parish priest, which too he discharged with total commitment. He is easily accessible and always smiling but when it comes to work, he can be quite firm.

I am aware of an incident, where he acted as a strict disciplinarian with some misguided youth during his previous charge as a Parish priest and refused to give in to their strong-arm tactics. I happened to visit St. John’s Medical College Hospital for some personal reasons recently and was delighted to see Fr. Lawrence as the Director – designate of St. John’s Hospital. I was surprised to see that with in a short span of 2-3 months, Father has established such good rapport with the staff. It’s always a pleasure to see him interacting with people he is always cheerful, friendly, and human and treats everyone alike irrespective of their status in society. He has a magnetic personality, which induces positive energy in whoever comes in contact with him.

He is a wonderful human being, a firm administrator, a participatory supervisor a leader with vision. I am sure that his appointment to St. John’s Hospital will benefit the Institution immensely. I wish him all the best in his new endeavour.

I met Rev Fr. Lawrence in 1999 when I joined Fr. Muller Medical College as a teaching staff. He was then the administrator of Medical college. A very friendly personality then, who was kind enough to guide me through in my initial days. It was about a year later, when I took charge as Head of Medicine, I came to know more about this wonderful personality.

I personally admire people who are disciplined, punctual, dedicated and more importantly don’t delay decision making. I have no hesitation to say I came across all these qualities in Rev Fr Lawrence. His concern for needy patients and his approach in dealing with students and staff is worth emulating. Lastly his all-round talent as a good speaker and his active participation in sports and cultural activity is noteworthy.

It has been privilege to be associated with Rev Fr Lawrence for about six years and I WISH HIM ALL THE BEST IN HIS IN NEW POSITION AS DIRECTOR OF ST JOHN’S NATIONAL ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES

Indeed Father Lawrence is the right choice. He comes with rich experience and a fund of knowledge apart from having a Ph.D from the well known University in U.S.A. I have known Fr. Lawrence for several decades. I have also worked with him at Fr. Muller's Hospital when he was the Assistant Director at The Hospital several years ago when I was on the Board.

I have had the pleasure of working with him at The Catholic Board of Education as a Board Member when he was at the helm of affairs. I have had occasions to meet Father Lawrence in U.S.A. when he spent a few days in Bowling Green, Ohio. Father Lawrence is a strict disciplinarian but amenable and caring.

He will I am sure walk in the footsteps of Bishop Percy Fernandes the founder Director of St. John's Medical College and Hospital where he served for more than two decades. Kudos to you Father Lawrence on the prestigious position that has been offered to you. May you have a long, fruitful and happy tenure at St. John's. Joe Gonsalves
