Mangaluru, Apr 8: After endless days of blistering heat, the people of Mangaluru on Sunday April 8 evening were blessed with the year's first rains.
The unseasonal shower brought welcome respite to the city that was smoldering under the summer heat.
The rain caught people unawares and many on the streets were seen rushing for shelter. Some however enjoyed the 'mungaru male' and went about their business.
The nostalgic fragrance of the soil pervaded the air as rain accompanied by thunder and lightning drenched the city.
However, the unexpected showers threw traffic out of gear at Deralakatte, where road widening work is going on. The traffic was choked as mud-filled roads made movement difficult for both vehicles as well as for pedestrians. Buses and two-wheelers got stuck in the mud, worsening the situation. Sources said that some of the commuters heading towards Mangaluru took a diversion through Madoor route.
On account of low pressure areas created over the Arabian Sea, several areas located in southern inland Karnataka have already been getting rain.
Earlier in the week, highest temperature of 34 degree celsius was recorded in the coast.
