Nanjangud, Apr 23: In a suprise move, the BJP has at the last minute decided not to field party state president B S Yeddyurappa's son Vijayendra from Varuna constituency.
All this while, the BJP had maintained that Vijayendra would be taking on chief minister Siddaramaiah's son Dr Yathindra in Varuna. Vijayendra himself had expressed confidence of contesting from the constituency.
However, on Monday April 23, Yeddyurappa said in a BJP rally here that his son would not be contesting from Varuna, and another BJP party worker would be given the opportunity in his place.
Soon after, BJP workers rose up in protest and clashes ensued, with angry workers throwing chairs that were on the dais. They demanded that Vijayendra be given the ticket.
The police intervened and resorted to lathi charge to control the situation.
The sudden change in the candidate has come as surprise for all. Sources claim that as Varuna is a strong Congress bastion, Yeddyurappa may have sensed defeat and decided not to risk his son political future when he's making his debut. Varuna is also the constituency presently being held by Siddaramaiah.
