Mangaluru, May 1: A groom who arrived at a hall in Bappanadu, Mulky in the taluk for getting married was surrounded on arrival by office bearers of Jaya Karnataka organization. The police soon whisked him away. The marriage was cancelled and guests left in desperation.

The would-be groom, who hails from Suratkal, is employed in Dubai. His marriage was scheduled to take place in Annapoorneshwari hall at Bappanadu on Monday with a girl from the family of a relative.

Guests from the bride's family from Padubidri had made all preparations for holding the marriage and had arrived early in the morning. However, when the groom who came there accompanied by an entourage and got down from his car, he was surrounded by a few people and questioned. The people who had come together at the hall were taken aback by this development.

It transpired later that the groom had already married a girl from Udupi by registering their marriage. The girl, after coming to know that her husband was planning to marry a second time, had filed complaint in the women's police station at Udupi and provided proof of the fact that the man had already married her. The groom's wife arrived at Bappanadu along with office bearers of Jaya Karnataka organization and some police personnel. The police, acting on a complaint made on Sundary, stopped the marriage function from going ahead.

The abrupt cancellation of wedding gave rise to frayed tempers and the relatives of the bride took the other side to task. They came to know that their would-be son-in-law, who happens to be their relative, had married two years back without their knowledge. He worked abroad and had entered into an alliance for his second marriage without informing his first wife.

The woman who had complained to the police said that she had contacted her husband over phone even on Monday morning and he lied to her that he was abroad. After getting hint that he was planning to marry a second time, she said she had tried her best to collect information about the bride and her family since a week, but had failed to get any information. She wanted to inform the bride's family in advance but could not execute this plan. Therefore, the marriage was stopped at the last moment.

The groom's side, it is gathered, promised to reimburse all the expenses incurred by the bride's family relating to the proposed marriage.
