Bengaluru, May 8: What we eat, what we wear, whom to love and freedom to speak are basic rights every Indian enjoys in a democracy. However, what happens if one is not allowed to enjoy basic freedom by the so-called moral brigade?
A viral video that suggests that one may lose their basic freedoms if they don’t vote ‘liberally’, ‘progressively’, ‘inclusively’ and ‘responsibly’ in the May 12, Karnataka Assembly polls is making rounds on social media.
The video created by a group identified as "Young India Initiatives" shows goons objecting to youth ordering steak, moral policing a woman in a mall for choosing to buy western outfit, trashing a Muslim boy for being with a Hindu girl and finally threatening a stand-up comedian who wants to speak on political issues.
The video then appeals to people of Karnataka to vote wisely.
Though the video does not name any political party and made to seem like a public service advertisement asking people to vote, one cannot help but notice the intent to spread a psychosis of fear by highlighting recent issues.
Congress was quick to take a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by sharing the video on its official Twitter handle on May2.
"Here's what the BJP would do to the people of Karnataka if it had its way. The vote is a powerful instrument for protection of your civil rights. Vote wisely & responsibly. #VoteCongress Credits: FB/YoungINDYI (sic)," Congress tweeted.
