Mangalore, Sep 12: "The work place is not just a place from where you earn your salaries. It is a place where you spend a big chunk of your life time and it is the place where you have to maintain vitality. At work place, you need to practice spiritual principles," advised 'Prajavani' columnist and director of Bangalore Creative Training Centre Dr Gururaj Karjagi.

He was coordinating an interaction programme on the subject of 'spirituality at work place,' organized on Thursday September 11 for the social science students, as part of a symposium being held at Ramakrishna Math here for the youth and the teachers.

"Spirituality is the quality, where humanity expresses itself in its sublimity. Love, creativity, restraint, co-operation, united efforts, respect for one another and the readiness to give up without getting attached, are the saliant features of spirituality. Instead of bickering over the systems or lack of comforts provided at the office, we should try to understand as to what extent we are contributing towards vitiating the system. We can set right the environment and live comfortably in any situation, if we are ready to embrace spiritual values," he felt.

"The strength of an organization increases with the power of mutual co-operation and united efforts. A job which one person finds it impossible to accomplish, can be done if a few persons come together for a single goal. We should understand that there is some divinity in every one of us, irrespective of what the person appears to be. Hence, we need to inculcate respect for every individual irrespective of his reputation in the society. By mutual respect, the firm for which we work can be taken to greater heights," he explained.

"Everything you to do for helping colleagues is an act of sacrifice, even if it is a minor one. We need to take cognizance of the fact that sacrifice has the power of purifying polluted environment. The main problem in the work place stems from the fact that we tend to find follies in what our colleagues do. Rather than finding fault and deriding people, we should search for good qualities and appreciate them for their finer aspects. This gives rise to a sense of mutual love and respect in place of hatred," Karjagi narrated.

Earlier, Chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation Dr M Mohan Alva inaugurated the interaction programme. In his inaugural speech, he stressed the need to educate and uplift people belonging to the down-trodden categories like the Koragas and Mansas. "The social workers have the responsibility to work from the grass root level to create awareness towards education and helping them to come up in life," Alva stressed.

Mangalore Lions Club president Vithoba Bhandarkar was present. Ramakrishna Math president Swami Poornakamanandaji delivered key note address.

Thanks for a great report! I was particularly interested in the comments on sacrifice, which is often not mentioned in the context of spirit and work. As a long-time writer and speaker about spirit and work, I love two quotes: "Work is love made visible," by Khalil Gibran, and "Be the change you want to see" by Gandhi. Many blessings, Pat McHenry Sullivan
