Mangaluru: 6-year-old Tiara Gonsalves wins state chess championship

Mangaluru, May 30: One of the famous chess schools in Coastal Karnataka, Derik’s Chess School prodigy, 6-year-old Tiara Amanda Gonsalves won the state under-7 girls chess championship held at Tumkur from May 25 to 27 under the aegis of UKCA.

Tiara scored 6 points in 7 rounds and bettered her nearest rival with good tiebreak points to clinch the first place. With this feat, she is selected to represent Karnataka in the national under-7 girls championship to be held in July at Tumkur.

Tiara’s achievement has not come as a surprise as she had bagged many titles of age groups in recent open tournaments. Tiara is a 2nd standard student of Mount Carmel School, Mangaluru, and is daughter of Dr Michael Gonsalves and Dr Sharmila Roche from Shivbagh, Kadri.

Derik’s Chess School talents Rudra Rajeev and Shraddha Rai, both 2nd standard stuents of Lourdes Central School, also delivered impressive performances by scoring 5 points each and secured 5th and 7th places respectively.
