Mangaluru, May 31: People who were affected by the rain water, flooding their area near Pumpwell, protested against National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on Thursday, May 31.
As per their complaint, the water which accumulated the day before yesterday due to rains, was still flooding their houses as the NHAI has blocked the way.
It is said that Highway Authority does not want the water to flow into the road and hence blocked the water. The protestors said this showed the lack of planning by the Highway Authority.
The protests were headed by Congress local corporator Asha D’Silva.
Sharan Pumpwell from Bajrang Dal also joined the protest.
Asha D’Silva said, "Even before the rains started, we had asked Highway Authority of India to address the problem as we knew it would pose problem during rainy days. But they did not take us seriously. Now we will not go home unless and until water is cleared from the area."
Vedavyas Kamath, MLA of Mangaluru South constituency visited Pumpwell where people were protesting since morning.
He inspected the blockade in the drainage and called the NHAI officials and the engineers concerned to the spot and directed them to solve the issue immediately. He also gve some tips to engineers to ensure smooth flow of water from low-lying places. He assured the public and the local corporator to resolve the problem without any delay and asked them to keep in touch with him if the work was not done.
