Udupi: Leopard Dies in Trap Laid for Wild Boar at Katpady

Udupi, Sep 15: A leopard was ensnared in a traditional trap laid to capture wild boar by the locals at Kallagudde crematorium in Herror village, near here, on Sunday September 14 night.  The animal was dead by Monday morning.

Forest department personnel who arrived on the spot, confirmed that the 12-year-old leopard  died of suffocation after the trap got fastened tightly around its body. There is no information as to who laid the trap at the spot. Ashok Kumar Shetty, assistant forest conservator, Kundapur Range, is conducting an investigation in this regard.



The leopard was cremated by the forest department on Monday morning, after a post-mortem by veterinary doctors. Range forest officer Satish N A M, forester Yogishwar, guards S Devaraj Pana, Narayan Sheregar, Anand Alva, Jayaram Shetty and Timmappa, were present.

The leopard had been terrorizing the locality for the past few months. Forest department personnel had set up a cage with a pet dog chained inside, to capture the leopard alive, with no success.

    People who had laid traps surely knew there are endangered animals around. Even then they laid traps. If nobody had seen the leopard in dead condition. They surelywould have eaten the flesh of the leopard and one day caught while trying sell its skin.

    It is our duty and responsibility to protect wild life. The wild life is at very much risk if this is the case. I urge the authorities concerned to punish the culprits and put and end to this. please do not distroy wild life.

    What is wrong with people...don`t they know that leopards are nearly wiped out of india...if they keep on killing precious wild life creatures like this, there will be a point when there will be no leopads left in india.

    If it continues like this within few years there wont be any more leopards in India.Next generation can see the photos / pictures / animation in books / videos.
