Bengaluru, Jun 1: The Bengaluru city police (BCP) on Friday June 1 clarified about a fake message which is being circulated on social media regarding BCP’s 'women helpline'.
On Twitter, the Bengaluru police said, "Fake message is floating on WhatsApp regarding this number as BCP’s Women Helpline. The number does not belong to BCP. People are requested not to believe or share this fake message. Stringent action will be taken against those who create and spread fake messages on social media."
In the fake message that has gone viral, it is mentioned that the Bengaluru police have "started a good service with a dedicated helpline for women. Before boarding the taxi or auto, sms the Vehicle number to +9969777888. You will get an acknowledging via sms. Vehicle will be tracked via GPRS." The message urges people to share the information with as many as they can and help women.
A Twitter user commented that it was a tactic by fraudsters to abduct women. "Looks like a huge fraud gang that has the intention of abducting women through this way."
Another Twitter user asked the Bengaluru commissioner of police to take action immediately. "Sir, we don't want to see "Will Be Taken". We want to see "Has Been Taken" in your replies. Because police is not doing much to stop these kind of fake news."
