Kerala couple leave baby on church doorstep; man held after video goes viral

Kochi, Jun 2 (PTI): A man was on Saturday arrested for abandoning his newborn baby in a church in Edappally, police said.

The two-day old's parents were traced from Wadakancherry in Thrissur. The father of the baby will be charged under various sections of IPC and Juvenile Justice Act, police said.

CCTV footage aired by television channels and circulated on social media showed a couple leaving the child in the premises of St George Forane Church on Friday evening.

The security staff of the church noticed the child at around 8.30 pm and immediately alerted the police.

In the CCTV footage, the couple along with another child, is seen walking into the church premises around 8:15 pm with the baby wrapped in an orange sheet. The father kisses the baby on its forehead before carefully placing the infant on the ground.

Police said the exact reason for the couple to take such a step would be known only after a detailed interrogation of the father. The baby was admitted to a private hospital immediately after the incident.

Hospital sources said the infant was healthy.

He loves.. he kissed the baby.. he was careful while placing there... he chose the right place. Definitely, he is in a situation which forced him to do so. I just can't blame him... my sympathies with him.

Don't bring a life to earth and leave it to suffer.
If you want to have a child, make sure you keep everything ready for the baby. Have lots of cash in your accounts. Make sure the baby need not struggle in the young age, Make sure you don't leave your responsibilities to be full filled by your child like paying back your loans etc.
If you can not assure financial stability for your child before conception, use contraceptives.

Result of modern social life enjoyed by youngsters who don't deserve to be a parent. A gift of modern education system and ignoring good virtues of parents and elders...

Whatever the background of the child's conception and birth, it should be appreciated that the woman is accompanied by a man, a man who seems to be the father as per his body language while keeping the child down. On the contrary, there are several men who get physical with a woman and leave, don't even bother to think if that union resulted with a life. Don't care to understand why a woman is an unwed mother.

I wish a safe abode to the child and of-course peace and comfort to the parents for whom it must be extremely to do what they did here.

JK South canara, please dont give your verdict soon after it is seen in media ,without knowing the background.Of course they aqbandoned a baby ,which is not correct. On the otherside I would appriciate that they didnt do harm to the angel. They thought atleast someone may find it and care it.God alone and parents only know the reason. We have no right to decide others life.Hope the baby will survive and get back health soon. What a luck they found baby soon.was it a reason baby is a girl, from worker family?looks bit more than three days old.Soon we will be knowing more.

Earlier days, in Mumbai, every municipal and government maternity hospital, a cradle was placed at the entrance, where couples could place their newly born infant child and go. No one asked whether the couple was married or not. Then it was the responsibility of the concerned govt dept to take care of the child. I think. such facility is not there now. Although, what this couple did was wrong, at least they have neither killed it nor abandoned it in the garbage, as is being done everywhere in India. Surely, this couple has kept the child in a place, where they thought that the child would be secure.

I absolutely agree with you. There are several cases when mothers leave the child in dedicated places because of some or the other bondage and when its solved they came back inquiring about the child. We see children given in legal adoption came back searching their parents despite being happy and content with their adoptive parents. Biological connection is something you can't make artificially.

This case should not have made public, that too in such a cruel way. It should have been handled confidentially. I still say, do not look for the couple, take the child into legal adoption stream and give it to a childless couple.

I second your opinion - they are kind parents, they did not abort, kill or abandon the child.

I think if such facility is provided in Govt. Hospitals now ( present scenario ), hospital should arrange to keep a separate ward for placing number of cradles.... Every youngsters might give a try and gift that baby to govt to take care... Then Govt should maintain a separate RESERVATION for these babies for education facility, subsidy, job entry and marriage bhagya... In addition to SC/ST/BC/Minorities, Orphan gifted category ..... OMG !!

Why do you have children when you can't take care of them. Have these people not heard of birth control? Half of the children begging on the street is because people make babies without having the means to support them.

He loved and carefully placed the baby not on the road in front of the church. There may be strong reason for that. Let us wait.

People kill babies. Throw babies in the garbage.

This father surrendered the baby in front of jthe church. Jesus took care of the baby.

Let Lord Jesus forgive childs father. Let Jesus give mind to take the baby back and look after the baby.
