Karkala: 'Free' Petrol Proves Too 'Costly' for Vehicle Owners

Karkala, Sep 17: Vehicle owners from the town and nearby villages, who had gleefully collected the petrol that was flowing by the roadside by using buckets, utensils etc., and used it to fuel their vehicles a few days ago, are cursing themselves now, as the engines of their vehicles have developed serious snags.
It may be recalled that a petrol tanker had swerved to the roadside and rolled into a gorge on September 11. The valves of the tanker had got opened and petrol had gushed out. Lot of people had made best use of the opportunity and filled their vehicle tanks with this free petrol. They are now forced to make a beeline for garages.
The tanker had three chambers. While two chambers had diesel in them, the other contained petrol. Due to heavy impact the tanker suffered during the accident, the inner walls of the chambers got damaged and diesel got mixed with petrol. The people had embraced this rare occasion and unaware of what had happened, collected as much of the mixture as possible, dreaming of saving lot of money.
It is also learnt that many people who collected the petroleum product in various cans, utensils and buckets, sold them off at cheaper rates later. Now many vehicle owners are faced with exorbitant expenditures, many times more than what they had saved by way of free filling. It is said that the liquid gave a strong petrol odour and therefore people believed it to be petrol and got flustered in bargain.
