Mangaluru, Jun 16: Deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, Sasikanth Senthil, said that Shiradi ghat stretch of national highway 75 will reopen for vehicular traffic before July 1. "Once this road is thrown open, we will submit detailed project for the development of Charmadi Ghat road and submit to the central government," he clarified.
He said that survey of the road has already been completed and report backed by integrated study would be sent for approval of the union government. He revealed that heavy vehicles would be allowed on this road from Saturday. He further explained that teams have been formed to keep vigil on the situation here, and repairs are being undertaken on priority in places where damage is considerable. He preferred to undertake repairs and renovations in stages as closure of the road for long poses lot of problems.
He was addressing the media at the mini Vidhana Soudha, Beltangady on Friday June 15 evening after holding discussions with tahasildar, T C Hadimani, and MLA, Harish Poonja.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA, Harish Poonja, felt that people will have two more alternative routes to districts in the plains if Shishila-Byrapura road and Samse - Elaneeru - Didupe road are improved. He drew the attention of the deputy commissioner to the fact that residents of Elaneeru need to travel 125 kilometres to reach their gram panchayat office.
In the meanwhile, vehicles have been moving on Charmadi Ghat road. Although there have been potholes and slush, the situation is improving. As there were no rains since Friday afternoon, the situation has seen overall improvement there without any undesirable incident on Friday. Damaged edges of the road here however continue to create problems for the road users.
Because of force of water, road edges at Charmadi Ghat have suffered, and there are pockets where the vehicles face the risk of their tyres getting stuck in mud that was filled in potholes. The risk of falling trees and hillocks suffering landslide looms large if there is heavy rainfall. Four backhoes worked continuously to maintain and improve the road condition on the ghat road on Friday too.
