Karnataka church attacks: Two cops suspended

NDTV

Bangalore, Sep 21: In the first action against policemen in connection with attacks on Christian places of worship in Karnataka, two constables were suspended on Sunday in Kodagu district where window panes of a church were damaged in stone throwing Saturday night.

"Two constables, Nandakumar and Shivaram, have been suspended following the incident in Siddapura police jurisdiction (about 40 km from district headquarters Madikeri)," Kodagu police superintendent TR Satish told.

On Saturday, Karnataka's first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa had told senior civil and police officials of the districts that they will be held responsible if attacks on Christian places of worship, which began last Sunday, occurred in their areas.

"Strict action will be taken against you without fear or favour," he told them Sunday morning on receiving reports of fresh incidents of attacks and stone throwing at churches at two places in Bangalore, one on the city's outskirts and the fourth in Siddapura on Saturday night and early hours of Sunday.

One church in Mariannana Palya in northeast Bangalore was vandalised Saturday by people who entered by breaking open its backdoor, city police commissioner Shankar Bidari said.

A statue of Virgin Mary outside a church in Rajarajeshwari Nagar was damaged in stone throwing Sunday morning. A church at Boonahalli on city outskirts was also stoned Saturday night, police said.

Seven people were being questioned in connection with the Mariyannana Palya incident, they said.

The Karnataka unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Sunday denied that it or the Bajrang Dal were involved in the attacks on Christian places of worship.

"We oppose conversion by force or inducement and will continue to fight against but we do not believe or indulge in violence," VHP zonal secretary BN Murthy told reporters.

Murthy asserted that Karnataka Bajrang Dal convener Mahendra Kumar, who has been arrested, never said his outfit was behind the attacks.

Kumar is in jail in Dakshina Kannada on charges of criminal conspiracy and promoting animosity on the basis of religion.

I condemn the attack on prayer halls, it was wrong. But it showed some interesting faces of our society and the leaders. The amount of hate mail against hindus, the REAL face of Margaret alva who did not want peace and keep violence alive. Fake crocodile tears from leaders like Mahesh Bhat, Teesta. Absolutely no condemnation of Newlife by any leaders. Looks like all these will increase the Hindu supporters of BJP. As it was revealed that there is no political party neither media or leaders except BJP and who support Hindus. Sad but true India is only country where majority have no say, but the developements of last few years show this is going to change for ever and Congress is on verge of becoming extinct.

Dear Chief Minister, great job done by suspending to police personnel!! What about the great Ganapathy who was in charge of lathi charge on helpless nuns and feeble women? Suspend him immediatley.

Our Home Minister has no moral right to continue. Ask him to resign immediatly. I also want to stress all christian community who have voted BJP in the last state election. Open your eyes atleast by now. Enough is enough.

Suspension of two constables just to deceive the media & public. For long years, Karnataka govt. was playing in Veerappan’s case, nobody knows he was ruling from the forest or minister’s house. Since VHP, BD, RS & so called groups are the children of chief & Home ministers, what can we expect from them? If you give one gold coin or a stone in monkey’s hand, there is no difference. Similarly, BJP got power in their hand, they don’t know what to do?

Instead of working for the developments in the state & leading a peaceful life, creating attacks on churches & worship places. These attacks & brutal activities are not lesser than terrorism. Since central govt. got solid ground to dissolve BJP govt. of the state, why they are delaying???

160 innocent arrested for silent protests. And only 2 cops suspended out of the gang of cops who violently attacked women/nuns/peaceful people who were praying. If this is the LAW then I would say SHAME ON INDIA, SHAME ON KARNATAKA CM, HM, DIG.

It is sangh parivar in totto behind these attacks. VHP is defending BD. BD is defending Hindu sene etc. It is a ring and chakravyuh. A BJP member is an automatic member of BD, VHP.HS. etc One face but names are many so that they can use these names according to their convenience. Why VHP has come to defend Mr Mahendra Kumar. It is all drama and convenience.

Great work done by Govt suspended 2 constables are they responsible for these incidents? Please don’t play with people's feelings. If you want to take some action take against real culprits behind this attack not poor constables.

What about the Inspector involved? Action needs to be taken against him too. Suspension is not an option in dealing with authorities involved (directly/indirectly) in beating people specially women and children. Punishing two minor constables, even if guilty, doesn't right a wrong. Having a police badge/shield does not give a person the right to unjustly attack others in the name of the law. That is POLICE BRUTALITY...

Not enough! The Police who overacted and beat up the Nuns and women in Mangalore must be treated as well. How could they beat up women in such merciless waqy and let the miscreatts go off scott free! If the police who are supposed to help maintain peace and unity in any community beat up the women and nuns what respect do they have for any portion of humanity?

Did they deal with Mahendra Kumar the Bajrangdal guy in the same way. They are expected to be impratial. If they are not then their training itself is faulty and it needs to be re-considered. Officers higher up must be just as much untrained in human values as the lower ranks of police! Don't yu think so?
