Dubai: All Community Meet Condemns Church Attacks in Mangalore

Dubai, Sep 21: The solidarity show around the world against the unwanted violence in Karnataka continued  as members for all communities  in Dubai gathered together  to condemn the attacks on Churches in India and Mangalore in particular at the Winny’s Restaurant  at Karama at 7.30 pm, Sunday Sep 21.

The meeting was initiated by  members of different communities of the coastal region.

Dayan Dsouza, Irshad Moodubidri and B G Mohandas

The main speakers were  Dayan Dsouza, representing the  Catholic community, B G Mohandas of the Hindu community and Irshad Moodubidri of the Muslim community.

A large number of office bearers of various associations  and community leaders made a packed gathering  at the Winny’s Restaurant hall to show solidarity with the people who suffered back home due to communal unrest earlier last week.

Dayan D'Souza, well known community leader and orator spoke first. He  said,  'People of Tulunadu are peace loving, be it a Muslim, Hindu or Christian. Tulunadu cuisines are world famous . Tulunadu culture is so beautiful, but this unrest has happened in Tulu Nadu?. Christians  in Tulunadu,  though a minority , gained lot of respect from all communities . There was hardly any violence from Christian communities  back home.  Even Hindus are peace loving and friendly people. A true Hindu will not  do such  barbaric acts”  he said.

'For the first time helpless women and nuns  where  beaten up by the police. Catholics were never  accused of conversions. Why should this has happen all of sudden?  What power is behind this?  Let us not blame all Hindus, let us not put a question mark after the name of each Hindu.  Instead ,  let the government find out the truth . Let us keep up the pressure  on the  government. We all here today to condemn the incidents that have happened back home' he said

Irshad Moodubidri, a well known Kannada author and journalist  spoke from his heart.  'No religion  teaches violence. But  bad sects of every religion always create problems.” He said . “  Look at  Islam where a  majority of Muslims follow true Islam and live by the teachings of the Holy  Quran.  But a handful of them cross the border, forget their true religion and go against it by disturbing the national security with all kinds of violence."

'It is very sad that  people who incite violence in the name of religion never bother about the development of the region or nation. Look at some of the pathetic conditions of the  roads in Mangalore. These  same fanatics can use their resources and time on repairing the roads or develop the city, instead of damaging public and religious places. The acts of attacking churches must be condemned in one voice' he said

B G Mohandas, former professor , thinker, writer and  editor of gulfkannadiga.com a popular Kannada language website spoke on various issues related to the Mangalore communal violence. 'I cannot bear to see my home town so badly disturbed. We are  Indians first and then  Hindus, Muslims or Christians. We all hail from the coastal region and are united at this moment. Indians abroad are well  educated and have  respect for each other. They rise above  religion when they meet fellow Indians here. I myself have studied in Catholic institutions and  so also my children. I have great regard for catholic institutions.  I do not understand why these 'unemployed' people should target Churches, priests and nuns . What has happened in the coastal district and other parts of Karnataka is sad, and it pains me a lot” . he said.

He went on to say that “ violence was  politically motivated, and there is no  gain for ordinary people.'

He urged all those fanatics who trouble others in the name of religion to go to  the villages and serve the  poor and  maintain their religious faith and not by  stoning and destroying sacred prayer centres and churches.

Other noted leaders, Ganesh Rai, Prabhakar Ambalthere, Arshad, Ronald Saby, Prakash Payyar, Herman Lewis also aired their views and offered their suggestions.

It was  decided that  a memorandum  be sent to the President and Prime Minister of India and the Governor of Karnataka  along with a signature campaign.

Alwyn Pinto, compered the  event, welcomed the gathering and proposed the vote of thanks.

Members of association like Mangalore Konkans, SMKC, KCO ABu Dhabi, Emirates Paradela, Sharjah Karnataka Sangha, DaijiDubai, Jebeli Ali (JAAKC), Karnataka NRI Forum, regional Associations like, Pamboor, Kanajar, Katapady Konkans, Karaval Milan, Pernal, Pangla, Udentichem Neketram, Ferar, Kemmannu Flowers, Omzoor, Bellevion, Belman, Mudarangady, Thottam, Konkan Yuva, SMKC, Konkani Cahrismatic, Puttur, Byndoor, Perampalli, Shirva, Udyavar, and others were present

Dear Mr. Rao, you know what JESUS said and you also know it is good. We want all to know that so they will see good and do good. Despite Alfred's Syncretic View, I beg to differ, however on the positive side, that knowing Jesus is no harm. Gandhi lived and followed the teachings of Jesus for he knew knew there was only love and that is exactly one would want to drive across and His followers are about spreading His love and not hatred or divisions. Despite who we are and what religion we belong, Jesus loves us all as humans, for whom he gave His life. God bless everyone who expressed their concern for peace to prevail in Mangalore and also the Daijiworld team for your coverage.

The people who created /disturbed communal tensions are those came from outside. Most of them may not knowing local languages.costal districts are slightly different in culture & behaviour in all respect- people of all community lived ,played, studied, enjoyed ,worked together..

dear alfred u r writing that "Humans were there before any religion could start. I have no idea the reason behind making religions" i too did not have it till i came across a posting in TOI recently.since 14/9/8 a lot has been written in this forum but most of the write ups were just propegation of mistrust, hatred or emotionally charged out bursts far from rationality.after reading that article i realised how we human beings can be at each other's throat for pseudo, absurd and non existing issues like god and religions. i'm reproducing it as it is- Why do people turn to religion? The human power of formal reasoning has an unavoidable limit. We can never be entirely sure of the logical basis of our conclusions so we begin to recognize that there are unsolvable mysteries.

And this feeling of being surrounded with mysteries, one cannot grasp, turns into indescribable awe. Fear of unknown make people turn to religion. Fear of unknown is at the root of all religions and all personal religious experiences have their root and center in mystical states of human consciousness. Like drugs, the religions too may produce a psychotropic influence on human mind and stimulate the mystical faculties of human nature.

Even so, religions do bring a sense of inner happiness, though short-lived, in a state of false inner tranquility and balance but over passionate pursuance may produce mild euphoria, cause hallucination and even alter perception and thinking pattern. Almost all religions are designed to bring about a packaged peace of mind. These turnkey packages come in complete with ready for use set of strongly held beliefs, values, and attitudes to live by. But do they really get you conditioned to deep solutions? All religions aim to give comfort and moral instruction for life on Earth, and to inspire hope for life after death. The religion should rather counsel contemplation and endurance shape common sense and awaken the believers because hope is but the dream of those that wake.

The religions have few things to hope for and many things to fear. One among them is the fear of hell. Fear of hell alarms the believers successively to the point that they dose themselves heavily by every specific remedy the religions offers. The consequence is that the fears, which had first been imaginary, become real and in the state of living, they become more dead than alive.

Dear Mr. Alfred Rebello, Your words are gems. We humans only created the religion without understanding the consequences. Had all huimans thought like you this earth will be like a heaven.Like Jesus told "love thy neighbour" , if everybody can do this irrespective of his /her religion what else we want. Alas it is only going to be a dream!!!I wish all of us Mangaloreans will forget the past and move forward like one family .

It is indeed good to see the whole hearted support finally coming from UAE NRI's. Though this response came bit later than that of other part of the world, I hope the final message would be conveyed through the signature campaign to the right level, which I hope would prompt an action by the Union/State government on the real culprits. I wish the State Government will see that the Mangalore Police who acted inhumanly on our nuns and women be pulled up for failing to protect the rights of people of the district.

Good to see few leaders and assosiation representatives gather here, condemning the attacks which took place back home. As beeji, stated it pains to see these churches being attacked. Having studied in catholic institutions like Capitanio, Gerosa and Milagres going to churches those days was quite common. We used to love the silence that prevailed there. Saying prayers like "Paralokadalli Iruva Namma tandeyae" or "Our Father in Heaven" was never an issue as it was our daily routine. It was later in life we learnt few slokas. Even today when I go on vacation I make it a point to visit Milagres or Aloysius church for old times sake! Talking about police attrocities, it will always be an innocent who is a victim, as the trouble makers and leaders never be there on the spot of action. It is certainly not wise to draw police ire and be there when tensions are around the city.

Humans were there before any religion could start. I have no idea the reason behind making religions but I guess it was made so people have many roads or options to reach the same destination instead all go in a singleroad. If we go in a single road, then there will be traffic jam, stampede etc and because of this many may not reach the destination at all.

However, for me, this missunderstanding started when those who created different religions, claimed theirs is the best road or path, which created enmity, hatredness and anger on other believers. This is the cause of all miss-understandings and as long we still think ours is the best path there is No chance for peace to prevail. I ask a simple question, if GOD preferred any single religion, then why GOD created and still creating other believers? To create turmoil? NO, my dear friends. God only created humans and the rest some of the humans created for reasons only known to them. And because of that whole world is suffering today. Therefore, unless we change our thinking back to humans we will not have peace. For me, when I die, I have to give my account only and nobody elses. Some think killing and harming others they have achieved their goal but they forget that they also have to follow the same fate one day.
