Mangaluru, Jun 22: In a proud moment for Dakshina Kannada district, young Konkani writer Wilma Lavina D'Souza, known as Wilma Bantwal in Konkani literary circles, has won the Central Sahitya Academi Yuva Puraskar for 2018 for her Konkani poetry book 'Mukhdim'.
In a press release, the academy announced its annual Yuva Puraskar in 22 languages. Ten books of poetry, seven books of short stories, three novels and one book of play have been selected for the awards.
'Mukhdim' was published in 2014 by Konkani Sahitya Academi, Goa. The book was released at Canacona, Goa in same year.
Wilma, daughter of Valerian and Lily D’Souza, hails from Bantwal. She completed her MSc from St Aloysius College, Mangaluru. Thereafter, for a short period of time, she worked at Canara Engineering College, Benjanapadavu. Currently, Wilma is working as an assistant professor at St Joseph’s College, Bengaluru. She is married to Vijay Monis.
Her poems and other works of literature have been published in all major Konkani periodicals and magazines. She has been the editor of more than two periodicals in Konkani.
Yuva Puraskar recommended by distinguished jury members representing 22 Indian languages and approved by the executive board of the Sahitya Academi which met on June 22 under the chairmanship of Dr Chandrashekar Kambar, president of Sahitya Academi.
The award in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and a cheque of Rs 50,000 will be presented to the awardees at a special function to be held at a later date.
