Mangaluru, Jun 23: Member of Karavali Lekakara Matthu Vachakiyara Sangha Manorama Bhat inaugurated 'International Widow Day' celebrations here at Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple, on Saturday, June 23.
Addressing the gathering, Manorama Bhat said, "A woman cannot be alone all her life. They need someone to hold their hands and guide them. Women have a lot of respect in the society and at the same time they have a huge responsibility on their shoulders. Being a mother, they have the responsibility of their children. Every mother is aware about poverty and every individual should respond to the pains of others.”
Senior civil judge of District Legal Services Authority Mallanagowda said, “Some years ago, widows were being sidelined. They were insulted and were restricted from taking part in public programmes. Compared to earlier days, at present, there are a lot of changes. The government has introduced several schemes for widows. Even the Supreme Court has formed a state level committee for widows along with a few NGOs who are working for the betterment of widows.”
Programme coordinator Harini said that there has been a considerable improvement in widows’ lives compared to earlier days.
Social workers Kaironisa, Suhasini, Lekhi Manorama Bhat, and Gruhani Anitha were felicitated.
Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara temple committee member Dr Anusuya, member of Women and Child Welfare department Yamuna and others were present.
