Mangaluru, Jun 25: A woman in city lost Rs 16 lac after a brief online friendship with an unidentified man.
Reshma from Attavar is the victim.
A case stands registered regarding the fraud at the cyber police station here.
As per details, Reshma received a Facebook friend request from a man named Jack Coleman. Even though she did not know him, she accepted the request and began chatting with him. They chatted regularly after that.
In May, Coleman told Reshma that he wished to make a gift of £20,000 (over Rs 18 lac) to her family. Reshma refused the gift but Coleman insisted that she should accept it.
Reshma received a call from another man who introduced himself as a customs official from New Delhi on May 9. He asked her to pay a fine on the consignment sent by Coleman.
Reshma was told by the ‘customs official’ that the package sent by Coleman had violated several rules and warned her that she would be put behind bars if she did not pay.
Reshma agreed and transferred the money via internet banking. She ended up paying Rs 16, 69,000 in all.
She tried to contact Coleman and the ‘customs official’ but all numbers were switched off.
