Mangaluru: St Agnes College issues clarification as students protest over hijab

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB/ANK)

Mangaluru, Jun 25: The management of St Agnes College on Monday June 25 issued a clarification on the protest over wearing hijab in classrooms by a few students.

A bunch of girls clad in burkha staged a protest along activists of Campus Front of India, claiming that their democratic right was 'taken away' from them, as they were not allowed to wear headscarves inside the classroom.

In a press release, the management said, "St Agnes College is a minority institution catering to women’s education in particular. We respect every student who chooses to study here.

"The management has framed rules and regulations to maintain order and discipline. Accordingly, the college rule states that the students are not permitted to wear headscarf inside the classroom only. However, we have no objection if they wear it outside. The students and their parents are aware of this rule before seeking admission in our college. Yet a few students have gone on a protest without even submitting memorandum.

"If there are any issues with any student, the management will settle the matter with the students and their parents," the college said.

After hearing the news, a former student who runs a business in the city said, "Next year the institution is going to celebrate its centenary jubilee. I completed my final year in 1998. I had Muslim classmates but there was no such issue during my years in the college. As I know, the institution has huge respect towards the students and treats everyone equally. My Muslim classmates followed all the rules and regulations without a single complaint, and I feel right now the issue that has erupted is unnecessary. I don't think there is any such issue in the institution."

Nusrath Fathima, another former student said, "I completed my gradution from this institution recently, but I did not find any such issue during my studies. Be it the management or the staff, they are very cordial in treating the students. I was not wearing hijab in the classroom, but once my classes were done I used to wear hijab in the campus. No one objected to it. As students, it is our duty to follow the rules and regulations of the college. It is nothing to make an issue of at all. As students if we do not follow the rules and regulations of the college then we do not deserve to call ourselves students."

Here is the next verse,"Yes, if she refuses to wear a head covering, she should cut off all her hair! But since it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or her head shaved, she should wear a covering.".(1 CORINTHIANS 11:6).

Mr. Gonsalves is 100% right. Read 5th absolute verse. It connects to the 6th verse explains clearly while praying inside & outside of the church, However you are not praying it is not necessary to cover your head. Prayer is to God not a display in a show casing a burqa and head scarf anywhere and every where.
Stop repeating on a merigo rounds. christian scriptures are not jumping from one verse to another. Christian scriptures have accurate meanings of the scriptures.

First of all please let me know in which version of the Bible it says not to marry and become Priests and Nuns. There is no priesthood Islam, so men and woman all have to follow its teaching .You are changing Bilble according to your convenience.I can quote so many verse of the Bible which are removed.

Firstly, I am not sure if it is the 'Niqaab' or the 'Hijaab' that is the issue here, as we see in the pictures, most of the girls are wearing a 'Niqaab' (veil covering the face and showing only the eyes). Either way, I do not understand what the fuss is all about, as this is an all-girls institution and according to their rules, one has to remove the hijaab/niqaab only inside the classrooms. All students need to abide by the rules of the institution which applies to everyone irrespective of their backgrounds. Moreover, if they were briefed about this specific rule before admission, as the management proclaims, then this "protest" of theirs makes no sense.
Making a fuss over these petty issues only brings ridicule to our community and we really do not need any more. I urge these girls and all other people supporting them to stop making a mountain out of a molehill and concentrate on real issues that plague the community, which need attention (gender inequality, unemployment, health and hygiene being a few).

Scarf is fr covering one's head. What issues does st. Agnes institution has if female cover their head. Y do nuns cover. Are they not teaching in schools. I know many convents where nuns teaches and also principle who is also a nun covers her head. Y these double standards. Y objection the students of one particular community.

I can see here people are getting frustrated and also lack of knowledge about scarf and burkha.
Bible _ old testament itself says females should cover their heads. If not shave her head.
    Do you people follow. ?

Can you explain with the context where it is ordered in Bible to cover their head only in Churches. What is the logic behind that?

1 CORINTHIANS 11TH CHAPTER 5TH VERSE BUT EVERY WOMAN WHO PRAYS OR PROPHESIES WITH HER HEAD UNCOVERED DISHONORS HER HEAD—IT IS THE SAME AS HAVING HER HEAD SHAVED.

YOU HAVE ELIMINATED WHICHER YOU WANTED. READ THE VERSE 5 EXACTLY WHICH SAYS WHILE SHE PRAYS OR WHILE SHE PROPHESIES.

A WOMEN PRAYS IN A CHURCH OR OUT SIDE OF THE CHURCH WHILE SHE PRAYS AND WHILE SHE PROPHESIES ONLY AND NOT REQUIRED TO COVER HER HEAD ALWAYS AS THE MUSLIMA IS FORCED BY HER PARENTS IF NOT THE PARENTS THE MULLAS MAKE IT A COMPULSION.IF A FEMALE IS NOT LISTENING SHE IS LIABLE TO BE BEATEN.

I AM A WITNESS TO THE FORCIBLLY COVERING A MUSLIMA’S HEAD WITH SCARF OR TO WEAR BURQUA COMPULSORILY.

For your kind information read Matthew 19:12

    Dear Nawaz, Udupi/ Kuwait,
Firstly if all people choose to spend unmarried life with the intention of service to humanity; it is very much clear that there won't be a next generation at the first place to serve them if all people choose to remain unmarried.

DO ALL THE CHRISTIAN WOMEN CHOSE NOT TO MARRY. IT IS A FEW FEMALES AND MALES WHO WERE CHOSEN BY YAHWEH FOR HIS KINGDEOM. THE ATTIRE WAS CHOSEN BUT TO BECOME A NUN OR A PRIEST IS CHOSEN BY GOD WITHOUT WHICH HE OR SHE CANNOT BE A NUN OR A PRIEST.

Secondly do you really think only unmarried people can serve the humanity?

SPECIALLY THE UNMARRIED HAVE NO CHILDREN AND THEY DON’T DESIRE AMASING WEALTH FOR THEMSELVES BUT THEY DO SERVICE TO HUMANITY. THE MARRIED HAVE CONCERN FOR THEIR HUSBAND, CHILDREN AND FOR HERSELF WORK HARD FOR THE WELLBEING OF THEMSELVES AND FOR THEIR CHILDRENS FUTURE.

Thirdly, Islam always chooses a mid way path which is easy to follow with the justice being done to all. So Islam always orders to spend and enjoy family life and be good to yourself and others at the same time.

ISLAM IS NOT A RELIGION IN ITSELF. IT IS A COPIED AND CONCOCTED STORIES FROM THE JEWISH AND FROM THE HOLY BIBLE. BEING A MUSLIM AND KILLING A NON MUSLIM, YOU CANNOT TO HEAVEN. ISLAM THREW OUT THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF THE HOLY BIBLE.

You said that nuns some times prefer to wear head cover during congregation. Can you tolerate suppose if some person comes and tell them to remove it. Is there any logic to support that person?

Can you just answer why some sisters prefer to be in Head cover during Congregation?
I NEVER SAID NUNS SOME TIME PREFER TO WEAR HEAD COVER DURING THE CONGREGATION.

NUNS HAVE CHOSEN AN ATTIRE BEFORE THEY REMAIN IN A CONGREGATION ( CONGREGATION MEANS BETHANY, MOTHER THERESA ETC., ETC. HAVE SEPARATE, SEPARATE ATTIRES).

So you yourself are claiming that it is the best code to wear complete dress with head covering. That is what each Muslim women are ordered to wear in Islam.

    Hi everyone,
Education is one of the source of becoming independent in your life, and the institute providing it makes sure that education comes first and that's what is happening in this case.
No offence to any religion but by wearing burqa or jaaniwara or cross etc if u say your knowledge increases INSIDE THE CLASS ROOM( that's the issue rite not allowed to wear hijab inside classroom.) Then plz go ahead and protest by giving valid(truthful) proof that he or she scored more becoz of his/her religious practises. If not please accept the fact in a class room u gain Knowledge to succeed in life not by religious practises.

An Educational Institute run by different religion or community have their own way of rules to follow.... If you agree then only Join else check for other Institution..... Why disturb the normal functions in educational Institutes like this ? School/College and Universities are meant for getting knowledger not to do this type of agitation.... Saihu,Udupi/ Dubai, please note, what nuns wear is after they have gone through several years of Religious Life Training. They are anointed as Religious sisters who have given up their family & other things in life. Wearing Hijab is a choice by a certain religion. If Manipal allows it is good for them. Here it has never been an issue for almost few decades and it should not.
College Management has clarified to parents of Muslim Students that Hijab is not allowed in class rooms. So before taking admission if they were aware, way make an issue about it now after classes have begun.
Today Muslims will come with Hijab, tom other religions will come with their attires. So college will look like a different religious Mela, than an Educational Institute.
What is College Management now decides to send these students home with TC with remarks about this issue?? Do you realise seriousness of that ?
So refrain from giving advise which will make things worse.

You are forgetting that Churches and Convents are neutral entities, they don't give advice on political affiliation. If you are saying that if the institution budges towards the protesting students, it will lose favour from Christians, that too makes no difference to politics.

As the management has clarified that the students have not even submitted any memorandum of their request before going to strike; It was the responsibility of the students to try to solve the matter in an easiest possible way before going for protests. The students beg for seats and once admitted, this is what you get in return. Just a hand full are enough to change the decorum of an educational institution.

Imagine calling some outsiders to protest against the institution you are studying. I feel sorry for the college where I studied as well.

Why do such students prefer ''St, Agnes''. Last year a principal from a reputed college was assaulted by a student after being patronized by these organization.

    Dear Nawaz, Udupi/ Kuwait ,

    I quote yours:

For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off:

    Unquote.

The above quote of yours is exclusively inside the church or in a holy place or in a prayer house for a Christian female not out side of a prayer house, holy place or a church.

Concerning to nuns covering head it is chosen while they enter into a particular congregation.

Some congratulations use saree, some congregations use salvar khamees and all of the nuns entire life and service is dedicated to god and humanity and they don't marry.

Do a Muslimas without marriage dedicate their entire life and services to God and to the humanity???!!!

    @ Joseph,

I appreciate your polite way of making me understand your point; unlike those who make personal attack. Thank you for that.

Firstly if all people choose to spend unmarried life with the intention of service to humanity; it is very much clear that there won't be a next generation at the first place to serve them if all people choose to remain unmarried.

Secondly do you really think only unmarried people can serve the humanity?

Thirdly, Islam always chooses a mid way path which is easy to follow with the justice being done to all. So Islam always orders to spend and enjoy family life and be good to yourself and others at the same time.

You said that nuns some times prefer to wear head cover during congregation. Can you tolerate suppose if some person comes and tell them to remove it. Is there any logic to support that person?

Can you just answer why some sisters prefer to be in Head cover during Congregation?

Can you explain with the context where it is ordered in Bible to cover their head only in Churches. What is the logic behind that?

St. Agnes College is almost a 100 years old Educational Institution now & I am and old student of that Institution myself. Never so far has this issue of " Wearing a Hijab " in class room has cropped up. All this is non-sense and publicity stunt. They are talking because they are not aware of College Constitutions and Rules & regulations. These acts are just motivated politically to bring a bad name to such prestigious Institutions.
College management has cleared the doubt saying Parents were / are aware that Girls can not wear a Hijab inside the Classrooms & this has been a rule for decades now. Why suddenly this Hijab issue has come up, is what we should think.
Who ever is making a negative comment about this Institution, please think again. During children's Admissions, most parents prefer Convent / priests managed Institutions. This is because your children get quality Education and discipline, values in life and more over good Communication skills. Children are in safe hands in these Institutions. This is why people prefer Catholic Education Institutions.

Dear Protesting students options to you are : either you continue to study in this Institution and follow rules of the college or take your TC and go to other colleges where you are allowed to do what you want to do with clothes and otherwise. Do not go on streets before you talk to your college management. You should have discussed this issue with Management before going to streets. THIS IS NOT POLITICAL OFFICE, THIS IS AN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION.
If you wear Hijabs today tomorrow other religions will want to wear their religious clothes and this will continue and Educational Institutions will look like different religious Mela Events.
Thanks to the person who invented " SCHOOL / COLLEGE UNIFORMS"

Religion is not just symbolic. It's a way of life to be followed everywhere. And wearing head scarf is not a form of any physical and emotional form abuse towards others.

We are in democratic India, not in Pakistan or Afghanistan.

If hijab is compulsory then the Muslim girls better choose some other college where hijab is allowed. St.Agnes College authorities should mention about the uniforms during the admission. If Muslim girls agree for the rules and regulations of the college then they should be given admission. If they dont agree, no admission , as simple as that. Arif,

You don't even know the reputation of two famous institutions in the city, where parents line up, ready to get their student in them. You must come and study the situation, right from January till June. The administrators fall short of begging them that they are full to the brim, take your student somewhere else.

Under such circumstances, if you are coming up with your communal equality, please sir, do not line up in-front of Christian institutions - there are many of those run by your own community. And, when you have already come in and are wearing a uniform that is similar to all other students, please shut up and survive the year and take your TC next year. The institutions will tolerate you for the remaining period because by now all other institutions have closed their admission process and your daughter's one year will be otherwise wasted.

Well, continuing for one year on the terms of the college, not under your terms.

I feel you need to understand the difference between Nuns or called Religious sisters and the students of St. Agnes College.

Gain some knowledge about the Nuns before you write rubbish. The nuns who wear scarfs or head gear have gone through a thorough religious education in their life and they have given up all the pleasures. You guys have no such facilities for women.

You guys instead of moving into 2020 you are moving backward into 1820. We are proud of our college and religion. There are different religious nuns who perform their duties in the college with some wearing scarfs and some not.

When students come to college they come to study to build their career and they should keep their Burkha outside the college.

It is a girls college and not co-ed college. Muslims girls removing their scarfs inside the class room is a rule they have to follow before they got admission.

If they think they should keep the scarf inside the class room then they should leave the college and seek admission in their own institutions.

Show me one good educational institutions run by Muslim bodies of international status.

We catholics with minor population have created wonders in the field of education, health and hospitality.

The nuns who dedicate their time to run such prestigious institutions are not students. The code is only for students to maintain uniformity and to remain unbiased on religion or caste.
When parents of a particular community visit the college they are not reqd to comply with any dress code. It is quite apparent that students who instigate such issues have nothing much inside their head, hence wish to keep it covered.
Grow up 'children', utilize your time in studies and make this a better place to live in.

This is the outcome of too much appeasement of a community by political parties, other communities. The more you appease, the more they demand.
Just suspend those students who can't follow rules & regulations. They are spoiling the institutions reputation. Police has to take firm action on those who support the students.

If the muslim badly want to wear hijab they are free to join non catholic instituitions. and avoid creating unnecesaary mess in the college. The management has certain rules n regulations and during the time of admission or the joining the principal addresses them again with the rules and regulations for their information.

St.Agnes is a well reputed institution and i request others not to simply spoil its name because judging someone without knowing is wrong and those who have been a part of st.agnes only know it.

These misguided daughters are confused about the culture and religion.....

Hijab is required to get protected from the fine sand in Arabian desert (even male ware the similar headgear in middle east, which is basically to protect them from flying fine sand generations before)

There is absolutely no requirement of such hijab or headscarf required to Indian geographical condition.

The protesting daughters are wearing shirts. If they are that much disturbed due to ban on hijab, why they are wearing shirts? this shows double standards...

Also, if they are hell bent upon copying the Arabic culture, why the hijab colour of some daughters is not black?

As per Arabic culture, can they protest in front of institution? that too with some rowdy males?

Thank God, it is St. Agnes. If this was done by some school run by majority community, response would have been totally different. My personal opinion, in all developed countries including the US, ladies are allowed to wear Hijab in a classroom and follow religious freedom.

College may have its own rules, but it cannot overrule the fundamental rights to follow ones own religion. Do we ask Sikhs to remove their turban? If I had enough time and money, I would take St. Agnes to courts (but considering judicial system in India St. Agnes would have won using all their money and political clout).

What is the mindset of those who join an institution by agreeing onto follow their rules and then to change those rules that suit you. Don't these protestors see how they are being disrespectful to the institution and untrue to themselves by first agreeing and then disagreeing. I think Hijab/Purda is done in front of strangers and men. Our Muslim sisters going to St Agnes are not exposed to strangers & men while inside the campus. So there is no need for wearing hijab/purda especially no need for covering the face or wearing a nikab while inside the campus that too in a womens college. Few men employed by college are no more strangers for all students as they meet & interact with them on a rehular basis. So wearing the face cover or nikaab is not required at all when inside the campus.

But wearing the head cover or scarf can be allowed as Muslim girls needs to cover their head/hair. If college management have rules to remove the head cover or scarf then the students can protest in a praceful manner by wearing what the Christian Sisters and St Agnes Principle is wearing on their head. All Muslim students should buy the same head cover as the principle is wearing and attend the classes. The purpose of covering head is important than the style and when Principle can wear a head cover a similar head cover will be allowed for all students.

And as a code of dressing, I don't think the few can hold the entire college at ransom for your headscarves or hijab. Please go to a Islamic college. Don't try throwing your weight around. If the head covering is banned in the college, it is so. I hope the college administration will not budge to the demands of these trouble makers.

Same way, if we say to you, leave India and settle down in Saudi, will you accept politely? We are belonging to mother India. We don't have facilities to go for pilgrimage..

If our nuns can change their uniform into Saree, which is the symbol of religious life, why your girls can't remove scarves inside the classroom?

Nuns are leaving everything, sacrificing everything and dedicated themselves into the upbringing of the society. They can wear full dress along with scarves as mark of their sacrifice and dedication. Muslim girls are making every style and over that you force them to wear scarves in side the class room what for?
Never compare nuns with anyone. Will the girls of your community can lead life like nuns/brahmakumaris?

If the girls do not want to abide by the rules, they can go to colleges where they are allowed to do so. Why comparing Rome or Italy over here?

I have just ONE nationality. Do you have multiple nationalities so that you can choose to stay in one of the nations ? Asking to leave the nation that you are citizen of, is a term you exercise on behalf of the nation - who has this power other than the President of the nation ?

As for colleges, there are thousands in a country. If you don't like the rules imposed by one, you go to some other. The decision is yours own, does not take the President to make it.

Hereafter, please compare Bananas with bananas, not with apples.

    Students,

There are many institutions in the state that allow to wear complete clothing from head to toe. It is clearly mentioned in St. Agnes College Prospectus that the school uniform must be worn during class and while in the campus. Have these students not read it ? In the Admission Form there is a declaration (signed by both student & parent) that they will abide by the rules and regulations as stated in the Prospectus.

While seeking admissions, you are all so ready for anything ?? You girls don't deserve to be in a reputed college like St. Agnes. Please seek a transfer. Do not instill rebellion in the mind of those other students who are in the institution, watching you.

They has got their community school / colleges to study with comfort zone. Making nonsense outside the institution doesn't yield anything other than spoiling the name of their own.

This issue is raised by some fronts only to get publicity & the welfare of the students doesn't depend on these trivial issues which are governed by dress code of any institution.
In a way not following the headscarf religious dress inside any institution doesn't create any division but all look Uniform by dressing in a same attire & helps all students get a sense of belonging to student class with no religious barriers separating them from each other.
Friendship should be built & not division by showing we are one step ahead or lower than others with narrow minded medieval manifestation.

What is the problem if head scarf is allowed to wear inside classrooms. Does this effect the studies? For sure those who were it are not doing this to look different from others. If it is the issue of uniform, let the students wear same coloured head scarves as uniforms.

Particular dress code is there to be followed in all places outside house. Why the schools cant be lenient on this issue.

Why Headscarf ??? Tomorrow they can demand complete Burkha - will you still say what is the problem with it ?? Simple - take a transfer and admit them in collect that adheres to Islamic dress code.

Robe them from head to toe and keep them at home. A girl who is serious about her studies does not care of such demands. When she does not want to study, all these excuses come to the fore.

That's what I want to ask,- What is the problem? Why it should bother others?. We are not wearing complete body covering dress in classrooms in particular; it's a normal practice we follow everywhere.
Regarding your claim that these girls are not serious about their studies don't put such demands; please note that there are so many highly qualified women who are always keep them covered in full dresses. Even my family members are Doctors, CA and so on, who completely cover themselves in burqa.

    @Jennifer,
Your suggestion is valid that one should take transfer to the schools which allows complete dress. But the problem is that we need quality education at the same time.

The schools which provide quality education and don't allow to dress completely are depriving Muslims of quality education.

    @Amith,
Wearing shoes is not a matter of faith and dress code.

Shoes are not allowed inside the mosque for the purpose of cleanliness as we stand and sit and prostrate in the Masjids during prayers; and the dust or dirt of the shoes for being unclean may distract you from prayers and you may lose your concentration from prayers and your clothes may get dirty.

If your shoes are brand new and 100% clean from pollutants then there is no harm in wearing it inside a masjid. But it is unnecessary at the same time.

This is an issue purely within the domain of the college. If they say, everyone has followed the rule in the past, we need to believe it and follow the same even now. If someone feels that it hurts them, college need not have to change its rule, but the students concerned need to change their approach to the issue as others; or else seek a transfer out , to an institution where such relaxations are permitted. But under no circumstances, they should yield to the pressure tacits, which can leave a dangerous precedent in the matter of other areas of discipline in future.

Saffron cloth never conceals ones identity.

Here, the issue is on covering the entire face and masking the identity from others which have dangerous consequences in a public place.

It is my constitutional right to know the person with whom I am sharing a public transport or public space and denying it is an offence.

Once you step out to public domain, you should respect others right to know the identity of the person and religion shall not be an excuse.

Best option to use hijab without objection is to remain at the privacy of home for ever.
