Bantwal: Bridge at Mularpatna collapses due to incessant rains

Daijiworld Media Network - Bantwal

Bantwal, Jun 25: A bridge at Mularpatna connecting Mangaluru taluk to Bantwal across Phalguni river collapsed following torrential rains that have been lashing the district over the past few days.

The bridge at Mularpatna connects Sornadu in Bantwal to several places in Mangaluru, like Kupppedavu, Kaikamba, Iruvail, Edapadavu, Ganjimatt, Suratkal and others.

Now, due to the collapse of the bridge, locals have been cut off from easy access to the above areas and would have to take longer routes.

Locals alleged that the bridge collapsed due to incessant illegal sand mining that has been going on under the bridge.

Locals also said that they had on several occasions submitted appeals to the authorties concerned regarding the precarious condition the bridge was in, but no action was taken.

The police later placed an expandable barricade with reflectors and closed the road leading to the bridge.

You don't feel ashamed to put any blame on MODI and RSS .why don't you face the hard fact .
The sand mining also may have caused the erosion of the sand near the pier of bridge over a period of time , and thus resulting in unsafe load on the pier itself .

Only head less people will blame MODI for Every thing

Oh... At least I got one person who took my comments seriously.... People won't allow me to joke also....

The serious thing is --- The Bridge constructed just 30 years ago collapsed and d-linked the two shores. If it is 25% stronger then we could see there some dips in it. It may not fell down... Even sand removed around also it may not collapse.... We should check the reality of Indian construction sector. Bridges developed during British era are still serving and are strong....

Finally the British regime is done. What have we done after over 70 years of independence. Could not even replace an age old bridge. Irrespective of which party rules the state, people should rise to the occasion and put pressure on Govt. to build basic infrastructure with immediate effect. Last 5 years there is hardly any development in DK under Congress. Yettinhole project or steel bridge project has not benefitted people of DK, and we are deprieved of our rights In the name of religion and caste based politics.

Mangalore - Moodbidiri - Karkala highway (NH) sanctioned couple of years back, but our MP wants to start this work from 2019 & sure that they will continue this work till 2024 in the name of Gurupura new bridge, dam sure that this road will be closed for years...what will be the alternative solution for Moodbidiri - Mangalore daily travelers, specially for students?

    The solution is simple
You have airport on other side of the bridge. Make helicopter fly both sides or arroplane! May be half hour journey

My question to PM- Sir how you transported men & material to build an airport without roads?
Did you airdrop them in a helicopter?

Very unlucky people at the other side of the bridge...

Most probably foundation of the pillar was not deep enough... And this is the result..
I think minimum 10-15 feet deep from the surface of the river concrete foundation required depending on the availability of rock bed.. If rock is there early stage then blasting should be done for few feet's...

Clear case of weakening of foundation of bridge pillars. All concerned Govt officials should be taken to task. Local Panchayat / municipal authorities should be jailed along with MLA, MP etc who are responsible for this. It may take few years to put the bridge back into operation.

Where is the routine inspection, safety measures, etc? How can illegal sand mining be allowed risking lives of people and causing damage to Govt property?
