Udupi: Brain-dead accident victim gives new lease of life to seven people

Udupi, Jun 26: A woman who was declared brain dead has given a new lease of life to seven persons through organ donation at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal here.

Nirmala Bhat, wife of Vasudev Bhat from Karkala met with an unfortunate road accident at Tellar road, Mathr Nivas near Ravalnath Temple, Karkala on June 22 at 7.30 pm and was referred to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and was admitted in ICU on June 23 at around 1 am under the department of neurosurgery. On June 25 at 12:30 pm she was declared brain dead as per the protocol stipulated by the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994 by four senior doctors of the medical board. There was no chance that she would recover from this condition or regain her consciousness.

Her breathing was supported by the ventilator so as as to harvest organs for transplantation, namely two heart valves, both corneas, both kidneys and liver

Vasudev Bhat, her husband and family members expressed their willingness to donate the organs of Nirmala Bhat.

As decided by the Transplantation Authority, corneas and one kidney would be provided to patients admitted in Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. The liver harvested by surgeons from BGS Hospital, Bengaluru for the identified patient would be airlifted by helicopter from Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Two heart valves would be used on a patient from Bengaluru, and one kidney for a patient in Mangaluru.

Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent of the hospital said, "With this noble gesture of the family of Nirmala Bhat, 7 needy patients would receive extension of their lives through transplantation."

    A noble job by Vasudev Bhat and his family who gave consent to donate the vital organs of Nirmala Bhat (wife of Vasudev Bhat) who died in an accident. It was a difficult task for the doctors and others to transport the organs of a brain dead person at the time of transporting was the main factor but seven people got a new lease on life. May her soul RIP and God bless for donating the organs.

    Donating organs during their heavy grief is something which is very difficult.

    We should appreciate the courage of family and also the intention of the donor.

    This is a very noble deed.

    RIP donor and let God give immemse strength to the family members.

    Good & more donors are needed for patients on life support or dialysis & those with reversible eye damage.
    A word or caution as we hear cases where patients in coma recovering after 11 years or more, but who can afford to wait for so long.

    Brain death and comatose are different conditions where brain death is irreversible and patient in coma state may recover after some period.

    Who can decide whether the patient is in comatose or brain dead with the present medical checkups or scans showing no brain activity?
    Yes there are guidelines & a panel will come there to study all the parameters set by a board, but nobody can say for sure, or 100% a patient's condition is irreversible. There are cases which doctors declared dead coming alive in morgues without hear beat for several hours, (if brain is starved of oxygen for more than 5 minutes it will die) & when final rites are being conducted too.
    Hospitals these days are conducting commercial activity along with health care, so parties need to be aware of the other side of the coin too.

    Yes of course panel of doctors can declare whether it's brain death or comatose. Tests shows the absence of brain activity. Brain death is 100% irreversible. Do you think hospitals or doctors will take chance in declaring brain death!? ... Brain death is accepted in THO act. Panel of experts will be declaring in legal paper and I don't think that they will make mistake in this terms.

    So sorry to hear the young womans accident and her fate.At same time her family was good to donate her organs to the needy.Now she lives in seven persons .she has given to most needed people a new life.May God bless her family for their good act.Heartfelt sympathy at the same time for the loss of their family member.May her soul rest in peace.

    I have no words to say anything about the Mrs. Nirmala Bhat's family who inspite of their own grief had a noble thought of helping other patients. Words cannot describe the greatness of the her husband and family.May God be by their side and give a healing touch.

    Appreciate Vasudev Sir for his noble gesture ..May God give him and his family strength to bear the loss of Mrs Nirmala Bhat..

    Everyday one question is eating me, Donors donate their organs (FOC) for needy patients . I dont think hospital will do the surgery for Free of Cost.

    If the hospital do transplantation for needy patients ( Free of Cost)Then there will be a true value for humanity.
