Tumakuru: MLA's wife inspects government hospitals, checks facilities, records

Daijiworld Media Network - Tumakuru (SP)

Tumakuru, Jun 30: In a controversial measure, the wife of Congress MLA from Kunigal, Dr Suma Ranganath, accompanied by party activists, visited various government hospitals including the government hospital at Kunigal, and checked records. She also checked store room of medicines, maternity wards, beds of patients etc. She did this reportedly on behalf of her husband, Dr H D Ranganath, who is currently on a visit abroad.

The visit was undertaken without any prior information to the doctors. Many expressed the opinion that the MLA's wife had misused powers of her husband and that she had acted against democratic principles. Opposition parties said that it was an effort by her to take control of taluk administration.

A number of people commented that the hospital authorities were not in order in allowing the MLA's wife to check records and facilities, particularly so as they refuse to divulge any information when common people seek them. JD(S) leaders recalled that the Congress leaders were alleging in the past that the children of the previous MLA were misusing power of their father, but now they themselves are indulging in such misuse of power.

Dr Suma later said that she has not misused powers of her husband. She said that during the election campaigning, a number of people and patients had brought to her notice about the poor condition of the hospitals and that she visited hospitals and discussed issues with doctors in a harmonious environment.

She said she will bring her findings to the notice of the MLA and request him to take appropriate measures to improve facilities. She said she has lent an ear to the problems of the patients and will bring to the notice of minister D K Shivakumar, Member of Parliament D K Suresh, and her husband about her findings.

No. Its quite wrong that a MLA s wife inspects Govt. Hospital. May be her intention is good. But let her tell her husband to do this job. In mangalore some of the ladies are Corporators. But they are not doing any work. Their husband does thee works which ought to have been done by them itself which speaks volume about such high handedness. Nobody speaks about this. So naturally here the wife has misused the powers of her husband. So tomorrow everybodybodys husband and wives will continue and indulge in such activities and according to system iand procedure it is really unethical to do such axcts. In that case let the Chief Ministers wife also do such acts and the Ministers wives also.

Despite being a Congress supporter... I must say what they did is wrong....unless this Lady is a Dr. Of those patients, and treating in the same hospital.... She has no right to open and check these records.... This may lead to people going and checking personal files of people from hospital... Shameless

This is rubbish. he don't have any rights to check the records and even to question doctors for that matter (unless she is a patient herself) just because she is the wife of MLA. She should be shown her position soon and should be liable to legal actions. I am surprised to see comments from typical bhakths here but they are dead when the news is other way around barring Dev. Wrong is wrong whoever does and you have to have that guts to call a spade a spade and unfortunately no bhakths can ever have guts to do that. Hats off SMR but bhakths still happy to disagree with you. BTW, Hemanth and Mangalore-Mumbai Shetty, is that alright if BJP does any hafta vasool but if that happeneees from Congy, then you can't digest?

Despite a level of economic stagnation, a small island nation of Cuba has managed to maintain a universal health care system viewed as a model for other countries. Current data shows the doctor to patient ratio in Cuba is well above the UN’s target of 1:1000, at 7.5:1000 in 2014. By comparison, Kenya has a ratio of 0.204 doctors per 1000 patients.

Cuban medical missions abroad are perhaps one of the most significant legacies of the 1959 Cuban Revolution. The programme involves Cuban doctors offering healthcare services in host countries, often in impoverished rural communities where there’s little access.

There are currently 370 medical colleges in the country that offer 49,840 MBBS seats between them. This makes India the largest creator of doctors in the world. In comparison, the USA only produces 18,000 doctors a year. Roughly half of India’s medical seats are in private colleges whose habit of collecting capitation fees is an open secret. Doing a back of the envelope calculation, if 24,260 seats are allotted with a Rs 50 lakh capitation each, that totals up to 12,130 crores a year in shady fees.
The UN/WHO describe the ideal doctor-population ratio as 1:1,000, and India is approximately at half of that. We might need 600,000 more doctors and one million nurses along with lakhs and lakhs of primary, community and rural health workers.
The Karnataka produces most medical graduates than Cuba, our health care services is not even reaching the needy. Former CM Siddaramaiah offering universal health coverage will be the first state to implement a scheme which is aimed to reach around 1.4 crores residence.

It is important for reassessment of government programs time to time. If MLA's wife being practicing Doctor follows the protocol then it is not objectionable. The state improvise need rural health care center. Tamil Nadu is started the program. India and Thailand spend almost same on health budget. But Tamilnad health care system is far better.

All health care programmes in a district are placed under a unified control.
It is a link between the State/regional structure on one side and the peripheral level structures such as PHC/ sub-centre on the other side. The district officer with the overall control is designated as the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CM & HO) or as the District Medical and Health Officer (DM & HO). These officers are popularly known as DMOs or CMOs, and are overall in-charge of the health and family welfare programmes in the district. These DMOs/ CMOs are assisted by Dy. CMOs and programme officers. The officers plays the pivotal role along with administrative functions, record keeping and maintenance

To me it looks like she doing dedh ooshari. Will wait for results of her work.
Why she wants to approach directly shivkumar/suresh..when her MLA is in between. Findings let her transfer to husband. He will take appropriate step.

Alex mangalore, however big her doctor titel is,she is not authorised to check in hospital matters, unless she has a uthorized letter from police or higherplace.Hospital is a matter of place where patients records are there which cnat be given out without authorization. One who goes to check cant be sure what they are checking. Many times these factors were misuse d,given out to other places.Afterwards they call patients and want to manipulate them to try medicines of their own.Such things happened her e once.So be careful not to allow anyone to "make inspection"of such art.when she must have felt bored at home when husband was not there and atrip to hospital.Simply tell her she is not authorized and close the chapter.

We should appreciate her as we expect some undercover investigators bring out some dark side of hospitals in UP.
Being as a citizen & doctor she has every right to inspect hospitals as that would prompt them to correct their incompetent state or corrupt practices or negligence.
People's Interest First, protocol later. some rules have to be broken to correct the sad state of affairs ailing our hospitals.
Vigilantism has to be protected & not thwarted with red tapism & if she had informed prior to her visit everything looks well & will revert back to the same old state the next day.
