Mangaluru, Jul 3: Vatican has appointed Fr Peter Paul Saldanha as Bishop of Mangaluru Diocese in a communication on Tuesday, July 3.
The announcement was made today at Bishop’s House here.
Fr Saldanha is the 14th Bishop of Mangaluru diocese. The diocese has 124 parishes with 248,860 Catholics.
Hitherto Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza served the diocese for 22 years. He will remain Apostolic Administrator till the newly appointed bishop takes over charge.
The date of Episcopal ordination and the installation will be announced later.
Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu, Chancellor Fr Henry Sequeira were present when announcement was made.
M P Noronha, secretary of the diocese, has congratulated the newly appointed bishop on behalf of the laity.
Fr Peter Paul Saldanha, born on 27 April 1964 in Kirem parish, was ordained on May 6, 1991. He served as assistant priest at Moodubelle parish of present Udupi diocese and in Milagres and Vittal parishes in Mangaluru diocese.
He later went to Rome and earned a Licentiate in 2001 and Doctorate in Biblical Revelation in 2005 from Pontifical Urban University where he had been on the faculty for a long time.
Fr Peter Paul Saldanha has authored a book titled ‘The Church: Mystery of Love and Communion’ which reveals his knowledge and commitment to the church. He is known to be very people-friendly.
He was attached to St Joseph’s seminary and had been visiting hometown once a year.
