WhatsApp comes up with new feature to tackle fake messages

New Delhi, Jul 12: To prevent misuse of its platform and the spreading of fake messages, messaging app WhatsApp has now launched a new feature globally.

In its blog, WhatsApp on Tuesday, July 10 said, “Starting today, WhatsApp will indicate which messages you receive have been forwarded to you. This extra context will help make one-on-one and group chats easier to follow. It also helps you determine if your friend or relative wrote the message they sent or if it originally came from someone else. To see this new forwarded label, you need to have the latest supported version of WhatsApp on your phone."

It further said, “WhatsApp cares deeply about your safety. We encourage you to think before sharing messages that were forwarded. As a reminder, you can report spam or block a contact in one tap and can always reach out to WhatsApp directly for help.”

WhatsApp had last month also announced unrestricted monetary awards for research on spread of misinformation on its platform to address the problem.

It may be recalled that last week WhatsApp in reply to a notice by the Indian government, had stated that it was testing a new label that highlights when a message has been forwarded. In reply to the notice, it said, “This could serve as an important signal for recipients to think twice before forwarding messages because it lets a user know if content they received was written by the person they know or a potential rumour from someone else."

Indian government had sought necessary remedial measures after reports of lynching and killing of people across the country in states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tripura and West Bengal due to large number of rumours being circulated on WhatsApp.

    Google check is very important before forwarding any messages. This is my experience. I have checked the messages in Google and forwarded the same to the sender the message in Google stating its fake news. Moreover, if I don't find the message in Google, I just delete to avoid any wrong doing.

    I would like to add here,having the Whats app , is beneficial. it has helped me to trace the families concern, of 3 lost people and one died during the last year. So we need to be very careful while forwarding the message. All the best to all.

    WhatsApp says it has 200 million users in India and I am sure 199 million of us are idiots who actively forward and believe in fake news, sometimes unknowingly and most of the time knowingly, because these fake news suit our beliefs and ideology.

    Therefore I am not sure this new feature will in anyway stop spread of fake news, unless we change ourselves and our beliefs...……….
    First of all how many of us do any fact checks before forwarding what we receive. The easiest excuse is by adding the words forwarded as received, which we think absolves us completely? Why do you forward any nonsense in the first place if you are not sure if it is true, or if you have not verified it yourself? Are people begging you to do it for them? Please remember that you are endowed with God given intelligence which you have allowed to hibernate and then you also have the internet and all its tools before you to verify facts and lies. Therefore why not make use of them instead of making a fool of yourself and creating discord around by forwarding nonsense?

    How will this solve the problem of dumb Whatsapp users?

    In fact, in most Whatsapp messages I receive from some idiots, it's written in bold at the bottom - "Forwarded as received"
