Mangaluru Jul 17: Minister for urban development and housing, U T Khader, inaugurated Indira Canteen Pumpwell Circle here on Tuesday, July 17.
Addressing the gathering U T Khader said, "Today we have inaugurated 5th Indira Canteen in Mangaluru. We have introduced this Indira Canteen with a strong objective of feeding the poor. We do not want any poor person to attend work without having food. Indira Canteen is very useful for rickshaw drivers, coolie workers and students to have their breakfast, lunch and dinner at an affordable cost,”
"Most of the students who come from rural areas cannot afford to have food due to economic conditions. Indira Canteen feeds those students. Poor cannot go to a hotel to have food that costs more than Rs 50 a day. Indira Canteen helps them to overcome hunger,” Khader added.
"We have already opened Indira Canteen in State Bank, Kavoor, Urwa Store and Suratkal and we have opened now here at Pumpwell. Soon Indira Canteen will come up in Ullal, BC Road, Beltangady, Sullia and Puttur. People have whole heartedly accepted this Indira Canteen concept,” he informed.
“Earlier during my tenure as food and civil supplies minister, I have made sure that ration cards would reach the doorsteps of every household. We also cut down on the requirement part, so that it will would be convenient for the people to get their ration cards,” he concluded.
Chief whip of Legislative Council Ivan D Souza, Mayor Bhaskar Moily, Deputy Mayor Mohammed, Corporator Naveen D’Souza and others were present.
