Bengaluru: 1,000 'war rockets' of Tipu Sultan found in Bidanooru Fort

By Fakir Balaji

Bengaluru, Jul 28 (IANS): Over 1,000 "war rockets" of the 18th century ruler of the erstwhile Mysore state, Tipu Sultan, were found in an abandoned open well at Bidanooru Fort in Karnataka's Shivamogga district, said an official on Saturday.

"Excavation of the open well in the fort at Nagara near Shivamogga led to unearthing of over 1,000 corroded rockets that were stored during Tipu's time for use in wars," state Archaeology Department Assistant Director R. Shejeshwara Nayaka told IANS from the site, 385km northwest of here.

A chance discovery of 160 unused rusted rockets in the vicinity in 2002 and their identification after five year's of research in 2007 into the Tipu era made the department explore if more such ammunition was lying buried in the fort.

"Digging of the dry well where its mud was smelling like gun powder led to the discovery of the rockets and shells in a pile, each filled with potassium nitrate, charcoal, and magnesium powder used to fire or lob them using an artillery," Nayaka noted.

A 15-member team of archaeologists, excavators and labourers took three days from Wednesday to unearth the rockets along with gun powder and cast in rustic iron.

"The war rockets are in different sizes, measuring 23-26 cm or 12-14 inches. They were found buried in a secure place in the well-shaped place beneath the surface," Nayaka pointed out.

The rockets will be kept for public display at the department's museum in Shivamogga city in the Malnad region.

"The iron-cased rockets clearly show Tipu's technology was used in making them. Some of them could even belong to Keladi Dynasty and the Wodeyar rulers of the Mysore kingdom after Tipu's reign," added Nayaka.

According to historical records with the department, the Malnad region, including the fort area in Shivamogga was part of Tipu's Mysore kingdom from 1750-99 and the rockets were used in the wars Tipu fought against the East India Company of the British empire.

Tipu was killed in the fourth Anglo-Mysore war in 1799 at Srirangapatna near Mysore after successive victories in battles against the British rulers.

A pioneer in using rocket artillery, Tipu used to deploy the rockets to deter the advancing British forces from advancing into his territory.

For developing the rockets, Tipu took the help of the French army, which used the British Congreve rockets in the wars its commander-in-chief Napoleon Bonaparte fought in Europe.

There was nothing called Indian nation during tipu time.
Everyone resisted the enemy or invader in their capacity, and it is patriotic.
I am sure there were fewer lynching and less hate, compared to now.

Christians were persecuted not because they were Christians, but because they were considered to help British, cos the religion was common.
When will we rise up and start seeing the future than rot in the past.

And all those ardent Christians and Hindus and Muslims and Sikhs and jains, stop lamenting about past, see what your respective communities are doing today.
Bring a stop to terrorism, corruption, lynching, tax evasion, fundamentalism and what not. All this rots the country today, not tippu.

Tipu openly eat beef and fought the British and died as a brave King. Most of other Royals secretly eat beef with British become sub servants to British and ruled with British protection like cowards and become rich and famous by practicing untouchability, taxing poor and keeping common man illiterate and powerless.

Former President Abdul Kalam, a remarkably revered personality for the BJP whose ideological mentor is the RSS, had mentioned an interesting experience while visiting NASA facility in Maryland(USA) as part of a training program on sounding rocket launching techniques.

He wrote in his book, “Here, I saw a painting prominently displayed in the reception lobby. It depicted a battle scene with a few rockets flying in the background. A painting with this theme should be the most commonplace thing at a Flight Facility, but the painting caught my eye because the soldiers on the side launching the rockets were not white , but dark-skinned, with the racial features of people found in South Asia.

“One day, my curiosity got the better of me, drawing me towards the painting. It turned out to be Tipu Sultan’s army fighting the British. The painting depicted a fact forgotten in Tipu’s own country but commemorated here on the other side of the planet. I was happy to see an Indian glorified by NASA as a hero of warfare rocketry.”
A letter from a Mysore-based journalist was enough for President A P J Abdul Kalam to send a top defence scientist to Srirangapatna to study Tipu Sultan's efforts to use rockets against the British more than 200 years ago.
At the end of a visit to various sites associated with Tipu's rocket and missile launching activities at Srirangapatna, a sleepy town some 100 km from here and a short distance from Mysore, scientist A Sivathanu Pillai declared: "There is no doubt that this is the birthplace of rocketry."

It is important to read why President Kalam called him hero of warfare rocketry.Kalam wants to know how Tipu built rockets 200 years ago. Tody we have more evidence emerging.

Please tell me what is average size of a rocket?

The average size of a rocket or something that can be classified as a rocket is the Height: 111 meters (363 feet) Diameter: 10 meters (33 feet) Mass: 2,840,622 kilograms (6,262,500 pounds) at lift off. But this demon king had rockets which were 12 inches long, which means it literally fits in your pant pocket. Is that a rocket, or is it a joke? Even cannon balls were larger. The large gun values had cannon balls who weight in pounds were 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 32 and 42 pounds (lb), where 1 lb = 0.45 kg. Hence, at best he may have used cannon balls.

If a painting showing things flying in the air, it is now construed as rockets, then mark my words in the next few years Muslims will claim that 200 year ago Tipu was a pioneer in Air, Sea and Land battle and those flying object were his Stealth bombers, F16, Migs. They had flying horses (like Buraq), that took off from (Bajpe) airport which was originally built by Tipu Sultan. Tipu also perfected the art of flying Magic Carpets that carried thousands of tons of humans, cattle from Afghanistan to Mysore, and like a well oiled ZN audience will give you a standing ovation.

Just one person has to say something close just once, and the rest will all believe. On an international forum when people around the world read such news it shows two things how much people exaggerate and to what extent they will lie to make their ilk look good. It's time you'll grow up and stop embarrassing all Indians or better still just start your story with “Once upon a time there was a great king called Tipu Sultan, and end it … they all lived happily ever after” trust me you will get 100% Agree

Sir, Your three paragraph explaination proves that you know very little about modern warfare technology. Here I am talking about 200 year old technology without any computers or drawing board to design.
As far as Indian history every king has left some bloodshed for terroterial gains which is nothing to do with religion.
I dont go far in this argument. But I can assume that you beleive in distorted fact.

Simple serach engine can yield more than one result for you in internet. Rest the size and accracy come later.

He fought with British not for the Indian nation but purely for his kingdom and lost.
He was very notorious, infamous for killing and torturing his own subjects belonging to Christian and Hindu faith.

This shows your frustration. No doubt tippu sultan is a warrior who stood like a rock against the cunning british and defended his territory even though he was backstabbed by nizams of Hyderabad."Tiger of Mysore".Hope you have studied social studies in your primary school.
