Mangaluru: Residents angry over oil leakage in pipeline, MRPL clarifies

Mangaluru, Aug 1: The local people showed their anger and displeasure at the officials over oil leakage from the pipeline for the last two days near Adani Company on SEZ Road Jokatte.

According to them, they have witnessed leakage in the pipeline that is situated between MRPL to NMPT. The pipeline belongs to MRPL Company.

The locals have expressed concern as the leaked oil might have reached Phalguni River water.

Following rains, the MRPL Company is yet to find out the leakage point and the officials at the company are facing backlash from the locals for their negligence.

MRPL clarifies

Meanwhile, MRPL in its statement said, "During a routine pipeline corridor inspection from MRPL to NMPT jetty, MRPL officials had noticed oil traces on the surface near Adani Wilmar on MSEZ road. The source of the oil is not yet established. It is noticed that waste material is being illegally dumped on the vicinity of our pipeline corridor. The possibility of dumping of waste oil by unknown persons in the vicinity of our pipelines is not yet ruled out. To eliminate the possibility of leak from MRPL's underground pipelines, the company has started excavation of the area. So far no leak from the pipeline has been observed."

    Sitting in Mumbai any body can say fire here fire there. It is not child's ay to put fire near oil leak. Further somebody said central govt is puppet in hands of Ambani and Adhani then why state go t should agree to allot land for them why Adhani wax given the upcl?, it is easy to blame any govt

    Despite all the clarifications given by MRPL, the surroundings of Kalvar, jokatte, katipalla and kana are polluted beyond repair. Natural drinking water sources are no more usable. High time these companies pack up and go away.

    Still most of govt projects have 1947 specifications and they are totally refusing to use new technology available now in market just to support Monopoly of some of the companies related to politicians. This is my personal experience with EIL. I request Modiji to directly look into it and make all project specifications safe to environment and to be competitive for all companies in market

    Dear Mangaloreans,

    Please fight and force MRPL to process the mud to remove all the oil leak from the soil. Then only allow them to do the back fill, if not this will go in to our ground drinking water.

    By the way who laid those pipes - Political party OR MRPL and its contractors ? Blame the Company not duffer and stupid politicians .... they are meant to eat commission nothing else in these mega projects .... MRPL should see that these pipe lines are updated and scanned on a periodic inspection by their officers... It is the duty of the company to manage this ... Let them do the job professionally and STOP any Hazards caused by those leakage to COMMON Public in that area... Also compensate those who actually suffered financially and Healthwise...

    Bengaluru HC, please take cognizance of this matter & stop operation of MRPL like Chennai HC stopped Sterlite operation for damage to environment & wilful negligence. These big industries are creating a nuisance for everybody. They are polluting all the rivers. Go to the Nandini river & you will see all the oil floating there. All the fish are smelling & the same is being sold at Surathkal market. Shame shame.

    Congress is still trying to get favour from people during elections by reminding them about Tenancy act. Your concern here is also our concern. But there is no power greater than political power which creates havoc many a time.

    It is not only Indira Feroze Gandi responsible but also Devraj Urs. They together put a permanent black mark on agriculture.

    Earlier the tenants worked well in their farm as they have a responsibility of returning back a portion of their yield. Once the tenancy act implemented they become Kings of others land and started not to work. Now they can legally sell the lands of others gifted by government. What a madness ? What a blunder ?

    Congress should not come to power at any cost.

    @Robin Byndoor,you are right.I remember they were diggin and piled up the pipes somewhat in early 70es,I could see on the road side as I was going home from mangalore .Now big problem is they havent found where the leakage is.Fear that leaked oil is already in water and lead very soon health hazards to animals,people .Fish can take up the poisonous chemicals and we eat them.Normally these pipelines should have put not directly under the mud(earth)but in a larger pipes so could have foundout leakage early,second,oil has not mixed up with earth .Noone bothered also till now about checking periodicaly.Now our children grandchildren and animals have to suffer.Hope they start immediately to replace weil searching,and stop leakage.Best they should simply install or operate this firma in outskirts of city.not near the water.

    Put a fire near the leakage spot, all concerned people will come running. No need to complain action will be immediate- police , fire brigade may be special task force from ONGC will come .

    In Middle East and other oil rich countries if such leakage happens the company is penalized and asked to remove the contaminated soil completely .Put new soil in its place and reprocess the contaminated soil to drain out the oil so that further contamination is avoided. For us in India everything is casual as the person who operates is not affected and if come under pressure then they will talk compensation

    Yes!!! good easy to say put fire.. But do know the consequences what disaster can happen... what can happen with the toxic gas which will get burnt.
    That is the not the solution......People have to fight through proper authorities...

    If our Govt only is corrupted what to do??
    Adani group & Ambanies are one who take decsions & our central Govt is a puppet in front of them..

    Paul, I agree with Francis.
    The big companies are not bothered about the health and well-being of the local people. As it is the people suffer so, why not light it up and end the matter there itself!
    In India no pulley is oiled until it creaks and to get the attention of the authorities one needs to do something which will affect the concerned persons. With the oil leakage there is always a chance of a catastrophe like a fire. why not do it now itself?
