Udupi: Valuables in Shiroor base Math shifted to strong room

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Aug 2: The gold and silver items which were found in the base Shiroor Math premises near Hiriadka were brought to the Math's premises in the town on Wednesday August 1 and kept in the strong room there.

Police officials of Hiriadka and Brahmavar stations scrutinized individual items and compared them with the list in the presence of Sri Vishwavallabha Theertha Swamiji of Sode Math, which is in-charge of Shiroor Math for the time being. The items were then brought from Shiroor to here and they were kept in the strong room of Shiroor Math here. The work of making the list and handing it over began at around 4 pm and continued for about three hours.

Late Shiroor Swamiji

Sources said that the items of daily use, as demanded by the staff of the Math, were handed over to them.

After the unexpected passing away of Shiroor Sri Lakshmivara Theertha Swamiji on July 19, all the items belonging to Shiroor Math continued to be in the Math premises at Shiroor. Both the Math premises were under police supervision.

It is learnt that in the interests of safety because of the fact that the Math at Shiroor is located in a far off rural place, and also because there was no proper account of which of the items were present there, a proper list was prepared on Wednesday and valuables were brought here for their safekeeping.

Government and other Institutions are there to run schools . Swamijis can out of their own income run schools, Hospitals etc. Normally the income from Mutt and Swamijis are spent for salary of Mutt Staffs, Temple priests etc run by them . Money is also utilised for bringing up cows, Sweet Water bodies, Veda schools, etc. Swamijis normally don't spend Mutt money to buy gold, properties etc. The income accrued due to camps of swamijis at various places generates money. It is possible that this swamiji could have camped with Deities in possession at many places and made gold ornaments and properties out of that income. These items become Mutt properties on the passing away of that swamiji.
