Mangaluru: Pejawar Swamiji visits city, stays away from media glare

Mangaluru, Aug 3: Swamiji of Pejawar Math Udupi, Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji, who was considered to be one of the media savvy religious leaders, has now chosen to stay quiet. Reportedly he has chosen to remain aloof at the advice of his lawyers.

The Swamiji had stayed at 'Manju Prasada' of Kalkura Foundation Kadri here on Wednesday night and till Thursday afternoon. On Thursday afternoon, the 'Tulabhara' service by weighing the Swamiji was offered.

Organizer of the programme, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, used to hold the 'Tulabhara' programme every year on a grand scale. Like Pejawar Swamiji, he too is an admirer of journalists. Every year he used to invite all the journalists and hold press conference. But this time, it is said, Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji had directed Kalkura against inviting journalists. Still, two newspaper offices were informed on Thursday afternoon about the programme. Several journalists were waiting to interview the Swamiji and get his statement but Pejawar Swamiji, who arrived from Pune and hence was tired, did not allow entry to anyone into his room. On Thursday too he did not facilitate interviews. However, there was no ban on journalists for the programme of spiritual address by the Swamiji.

In the past, Pejawar Swamiji had never refused to speak to journalists. But it is said that the way the media behaved relating to the unnatural death of Shiroor Swamiji came as a rude shock to Shivalli Brahmin community which patronizes the said Math. The community also had approached high court seeking restraint against newspapers and social media networks publishing baseless stories about the eight Maths.

When an interview of Pejawar Swamiji was aired in a television channel, some opponents wanted to know whether the stay does not apply to Pejawar Swamiji. The lawyers, who seem to have learnt a lesson from the recent experiences, have drawn up a plan not to fall prey to media houses which have been waiting to blow the issue out of proportions.
