Mangaluru: Rain fury subsides, weather still cloudy in coast

Stranded fishermen rescued, Bantwal schools remain closed

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (DC)

Mangaluru, Aug 16: After three days of heavy rainfall in the coast, it has been a respite to the people since there was decline in the intensity of rainfall on Wednesday August 15.

Mangaluru received heavy rainfall on Wednesday night. The low-lying areas near Kinnigoli got submerged in water. Following continuous rains, Phalguni River has been flowing above danger mark causing flood-like situation in several areas of Gurpur-Kaikamba.

The Netravathi River too has been flowing above the danger mark and the Tahasildar of Bantwal has declared holiday for schools in the taluk on Thursday August 16. Holiday has also been declared for schools in Sullia on Thursday.

A landslide that occurred near Jodupala on Mani-Mysuru highway blocked movement of vehicles on Wednesday too.

Meanwhile in Udupi, over 8 fishermen were rescued by the coast guard after their boat in deep sea lost control due to turbulent waves.

Did you grandfather predict cyclones 3-4 days before their arrival and death of many people. May be 20 years back similar rains would have flooded and killed more than 1000 people. Today's meteorology is helping people in early warning and satellites are a way of life ,Please do not tell now that plough was better than tiller or tractor because your grandfather used it!. The Dams may be bad during rainy season ,but they store water for the summer season
