Mangaluru: Water level in Netravati River increases, residential areas in Ullal inundated

Mangaluru, Aug 17: The heavy downpour from the past few days has resulted in the increase of water level in Netravati River. As a result, the residential areas near Ullal Uliya river bank are inundated.

Water-logging situation is being witnessed since Thursday, August 16. More than fifty houses are inundated. Water is filled in the yards of Uliya resident Wilfred D'Souza, Andry D'Souza, Sunil, Bhavani, Jagadish, Lancy D'Souza, Rufina D'Souza, Remeza, Felix D'Souza, Stephan, Pravin Cutinha, Robert D'Souza, Stella, Rachana and Suzana D' Souza’s houses.

Explaining her sad state, Pramila D'Souza, a local said, “The house yard is filled with water since late night from Thursday. All have kept their belongings in higher places inside their house fearing the rising level of water. Young men gathered and helped people. Floods are seen here after several years. Municipal council officials have visited and promised to open Ganji Kendra for flood victims if necessary.”

    A few weeks back NASA has alerted about flooding in western coast, especially, in Mangalore. Many people have over confidently ridiculed the alert and some sarcastic audio conversation was also circulated in WhatsApp. We should take such warnings seriously and prepare for the calamities. Never listen to the fools but listen to the educated scientists. This will save many lives. The predictions many not be 100% true as the NASA cannot predict mother nature with pin point accuracy. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

    Has Nasa predicted floods in Kerala, in kodagu, Beltangady, sullia, Floods in UP, floods in Bangladesh etc. First of all try to understand what Nasa has predicted then speak from top not from the bottom.

    As predicted by NASA weather forecast..due to Global warming damage.. .which is irreversible ..arctics are melting(Glaciers)..Ocean levels are rising...
    Hot gasses have Ruptured OZONE layers.
    Low level Coastal areas like Kerala...Mangalore..Bombay etc.
    on west coast.. will have to get geared up by taking preventive measures.
    change Building construction codes...
    start building.. Halls..schools.. on Mountain /High altitudes.
    Learn from the Japanese who are continuously getting Battered all the time..
    they can share their experience.. Japanese would be the best people to seek advice. and support..
    Govt shouldn't sleep on it.
    All Mangalore citizens along with Keralites.. Bombayites ..CITIZEN panels should aggressively get involve din these areas.
    as it is critical.
    Education needed...
    Construction methods..designing.. foundation..construction Chemicals.. ..materials should all be specified and made available.
    while Municipality start building MICRO/mini Dams...
    Build Diaphragm walls.
    build break waters with Concrete TETRAPODS..IN THE SEA...
    Electricity: department should start designing and building POLES...for Cables.. wiring etc to be foolproof.all weather proof.
    100% safe.
    Follow the Japanese specifications.
    which can withstand high speed winds...the Design of the Supporting Poles..(..KAMBA)
    WITH GREAT DETAILS.
    Storm water drains.... sewage.. Garbage disposal.
    Gutters have to be designed and built to perfection by the MAIN CONTRACTOR and not sub contractor.
    with Correct specifications//standards..
    No short cuts/sub standard to save money.
    All levels for flow of water should be perfect.
    Follow German/european/Japanese standards...
    If not followed the PUBLIC/JANATHA should intervene and STP the work and take the in charge to TASK.

    When our evil deeds increase all those natural calamities are normal since the birth of this world.
    Lynching mob , corruption, hatred, gangrapes, murders for eating habits, are all the reasons for the nature’s fury. Just count on in coming days if we will repent from those evils.

    Abdulla Abdulla this doesn't work here since nature has tuzo mokela (has made love with you) to be on the lighter side. If what you have written was text book followed no such disaster would take place and would be mitigated. But unfortunately who listens?

    Looks like you just completed your civil engineering!! Above news is all about the heavy rainfall effects which is common during rainy season. You have written so many suggestions which will take so many years to implement...what we can do now is just pray for the people affected by heavy rain to get them food and shelter...
