Former Mangalore University Professor Jayagopal Uchil dies in road mishap

Mangaluru, Aug 18: Professor Jayagopal Uchil, former Mangalore University professor, who was fatally injured in a road accident, passed away here on Friday, August 17.

The accident occurred at Hosur Road. He was shifted to Greenfield's Hospital, HSR Layout, where he breathed his last on Friday.

Funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon at Hebbal Crematorium.

His is survived by his wife Jayasheela Jayagopal and two daughters.

Prof Jayagopal was former dean of faculty of science of technology of Mangalore University. He was also member of senate, syndicate and academic council of the university.

He was the founder chairman of department of material science of the university.

    Passionate in the topic he teaches, takes active interest in the progress of each and every student he teaches when they are in his department or even after they have graduated. One of the very few responsible for the graduation from Manasagangothri -> Mangalagangothri. Has touched the heart and life of every student he taught and his famous prophecy viz., "Completion of SSLC is enough to understand my lectures (for masters students); such was his teaching ability that requires full understanding of the subject. Clarity in communication and measured talk are all his attributes that will be missed. Responsible for the formation of Materials Science Department in Mangalore University much earlier than anywhere in Karnataka. He will be missed by everyone who came across him and he is irreplaceable. It is indeed a sad.
