‘Girls in Aviation Day’ observed at Mangaluru International Airport

Mangaluru, Aug 23: Airport Authority of India (AAI) in association with Women Aviation India conducted a day-long programme observing ‘Girls in Aviation Day’ here at Mangaluru International Airport on Thursday, August 23.

Mangaluru International Airport is one among 11 airports all over India selected to host the programme. ‘Girls in Aviation Day’ was celebrated by the Women Aviation International India chapter, which is a registered society working for the cause of women in aviation. The programme is mainly to encourage girls to join the aviation industry.

As many as 50 students of St Agnes PU College, Lourdes Central School and Canara PU College took part in the programme.

Srilatha along with Jyoti, Sathish and Piyusha, briefed the students at the Air traffic Centre (ATC) building on the controlling of an aircraft. Students were also told about how they communicate with the pilot about directions, radar positions, speed of the flight and how the staff directs the pilots with the use of equipment at the ATC building. Students were even briefed about how to opt aviation as their career, and what roles they have to play in this sector. The students visited the ATC tower which is fully equipped with aircraft controlling system.

The students also witnessed the live landing and take-off of flights on the runway.

Chief financial officer of Bird Group Kamal Chakravarthy briefed the students on Bird Group.

Station manager of Jet Airways, Vanitha briefed about various passenger facilities and also about the functioning of the airlines.

Director of Mangaluru International Airport V Venkateshwara Rao briefed the students about various opportunities to build their career in the aviation industry and also to explore the AAI official website for career opportunities.

Coordinator of the program Hazel Concessao said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to explore themselves about the functioning of the airport. They have also familiarized themselves with the opportunities for girls in aviation. We saw the students’ enthusiasm and interest. This will encourage us to hold this programme every year. We thank the chairman of AAI Guru Mohapatra for giving us a chance along with Women Aviation India. Special thanks to airport director V V Rao for his encouragement and support to make this event a grand success.”

Sharing her experience, Anushree from Lourdes Central School said, “We were not aware how the airport functions which we got to see today. We never thought that there would be so much of opportunities for girls in this sector.”
