Kundapur, Aug 26: Gangolli town, which was going through a period of tension on the issue of cattle slaughter since some days, has been slowly returning to normalcy.
A youth had been assaulted on August 22 on the allegation of lining up cattle for slaughter. Thereafter, the environment had turned tense. Now the situation is calm.
Police presence has been beefed up in and around Gangolli as a precautionary measure to avoid any unpleasant incidents. Two contingents of Karnataka State Reserve Police and a district armed police contingent have been assigned with the task of maintaining law and order.
The police had instructed shops and establishments in Gangolli and nearby places to close down by 8.30 pm everyday beginning from August 24. This instruction was resented by some merchants. The fishermen too have said that with the resumption of deep sea fishing, boats return to the port late night. They say that if the shops are closed and auto rickshaws are sent back, the fishermen will have problem to return to their homes by rickshaws.
Notwithstanding this resistance, the police continued to see that shops in both Gangolli and Gujjadi towns downed their shutters by 8.30 pm even on Saturday.
